A large number of cut slopes have been created during road constructions due Korea’s mountainous topography. KICT and MLTM have developed and operated CSMS (Cut slope management system) project in order to maintain the stability of cut slopes nationwide since Dec 1997. The technology of slope management using navigation are developed all over the world (hereafter will be referred as "Slope Navigation System"). The field officer can directly access the cut slope information from the field which makes cut slope management effective and efficient through navigation system. The greatest advantage of this system is that it allows the field officer to access investigated and gathered informations. When a sign of cut slope failure is detected the field officer and the slope expert can communicate using the navigation's interactive communication system which makes an active and effective disaster prevention possible.

The result of analysis on the road accident data shows that spiral curve transition sections were most vulnerable to traffic accidents. This study also examines speed distributions, lane-changing points for exiting and speed deceleration characteristics for the four different types of exit ramp areas based on the video images. To evaluate the level of design safety, the concept of DSI (Design Safety Index) is also newly proposed. This index is defined as the total sum of weighted accident rates multiplied by the ratio of the installed length over the standard one. To validate the effectiveness of DSI, statistical analysis is carried out for the two different data sets one for sites with road accidents and the other for sites without road accidents. The distribution ratio of each section length on both sites was found to be significantly different from each other. With this result, it is concluded that the distribution ratio of sites without accidents was better than that of sites with accidents. The analysis confirms that DSI can be used as an index to evaluate the design safety of exit ramp areas. Finally, to enhance design safety on freeway exit ramp areas, the study have developed a new design method to consider driving behaviors including high-speed exiting, rapid deceleration and lane-changing according to geometric alignment.

As a result, research and development of a standard platform that can provide support so that numerous communication technologies that are being used in various ITS services to receive various ITS services can be operated in one integrated terminal are being carried out. On Board Unit (OBU) for a recent standard platform was also built and tested recently. However, verification for standard suitability of the standard platform OBU that was developed must be carried out. Standard technology must be realized and sufficient functional and operational testing must be carried out in order to guarantee efficient operation in an actual ITS system and increase utilization of standard technology. Therefore, a study on construction of a test site to verify the test equipment for application of the standard and to verify the standard platform OBU in actual road environment was carried out in this paper.

The wraparound view technology enables some part of the complete surrounding area of a vehicle, which the driver wants to monitor, to be visualized from a freely chosen viewpoint. Also, we have improved visibility at nighttime by using near-infrared LED lighting. Using these technologies, we have developed an appropriate HMI for monitoring the surrounding area in various driving situations, e.g. when parking, entering into a blind corner and confirming of danger at right or left turn collision.

However, driver stress intensity of automatic platooning has to be evaluated, since driver stress occurs by the closed gap distance. In the paper, bio-signal indices of surface electromyogram (sEMG) of masseter and emotional perspiration (EP) are proposed to evaluate driver stress intensity of automatic platooning. In virtue of a universal driving simulator, the bio-signals of subjects were measured in virtual traffic environment of automatic platooning. By the analysis of the bio-signal indices, it is found that driver stress intensities decrease in the order of trucks distances of 4, 8, and 12 meters sequentially, and analytical result shows that the driver stress intensities of trucks distances of 4 and 8 meters in automatic platooning mode are larger than the driver stress intensities of free driving (FD) in normal driving mode. Moreover, relations of the driver stress intensities and inverse Time-to-Collision (iTTC) in automatic platooning mode are also discussed in this paper.

Many active safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, parking assistance and lane keeping system have been developed to target these intersecting regions. However, dynamic driver state was not properly taken into account in the safety systems because the selection of dominant attributes and modeling architectures for state detection are not fully established yet. In order to categorize driver state in terms of driver wellness, researchers in MIT suggested a modified inverted-U shaped curve which depicts the relationship between arousal level and driver performance. This paper demonstrates an implementation of a driver aware vehicle platform to detect driver state based on the MIT wellness concept. In order to detect driver state, various overt and covert measures such as driving performance, visual attention, physiological arousal and traffic situation should be collected and interpreted. The main focus of this paper is to provide implementation techniques for the synchronized data collection and integration of inputs from multiple domains.

However, the cities have suffered from many difficulties through the initial introduction of ITS, differently from big cities such as Seoul, Pusan, and so on. The city of Siheung tried to establish a more thorough ITS master plan in order to overcome such difficulties. For example, the city officials and research team for the master plan sought for suitable ITS services for the city through surveys and analyses on existing ITS implementations in other cities. This research effort is intended to introduce such efforts to establish the ITS master plan for more sustainable ITS services in such small and medium-sized cities.

In addition, increase in routes that pass through mountains, valleys and ocean have also played a part in increasing the size of the structures. This is different from the road environment that has been built up to the present. Therefore, design and construction of long span bridges like suspension bridges or cable-stayed girder bridges have increased. Bridge designers are doing their best to satisfy demands like this from society. Even though precise design and construction as well as continuous and meticulous maintenance are essential for obtaining commonality of large bridges like these, policy in Korea has been to concentrate on design for construction of the structure. While a maintenance and management system utilizing instruments has been introduced for some special bridges, the level of utilization has been insignificant. If more attention had been paid, maybe an accident like the collapse of Sungsu Bridge could have been avoided. On the other hand, this accident provided an impetus to reexamine the need for bridge maintenance and management. Those related to bridge technology started to search for solutions to problems by carrying out various research projects.

The surface texture could be sectionally changed by texturing methods, resulting in the increase of dynamic load due to the speed variation of heavy vehicles. In order to evaluate the dynamic the dynamic load increment in the section treated with surface texturing, four kinds of heavy vehicles (class-4, class-5, class-6 and class-7) are selected considering the passing frequency and damage effect on cement concrete pavement. In addition, artificial profiles with three types of grooving (general grooving, drainage grooving and warning grooving) are made. by the texturing design guide line of the cement concrete pavement. From the dynamic analysis, dynamic load increases up tp 2.23 % and 1.47 % in the general grooving and drainage grooving, repectively, which shows those grooving types have a little dynamic effects on the surface of cement concrete pavement. However, in the warning grooving , dynamic load highly increases up to 10.09 %, so that additional analyses are performed at the condition of the pavement with warning grooving at various widths and spacings. Especially when the spacing of the warning grooving is 3 m, dynamic load increment is minimal. This study has performed additional analyses of the divided spacings of warning grooving. From the results, it is found that the conditions with width 6 cm, spacing between 150 cm and 250 cm in the warning grooving make it possible to minimize the impacts of dynamic load.

However, in case of fog occurrence, although the brightness of VMS needs to be increased as the driver's view becomes cloudy, real brightness of VMS gets lower because surrounding brightness becomes darker, which makes drivers cannot recognize the information of VMS at all. We studied the solution for the drivers to make safe driving when foggy by helping them realize the road status through VMS information and recognize fog leading light of VMS at a long distance utilizing fog sensor, high brightness power LED and fog leading light.

The social infrastructures are also significantly changing, where products contributing to the safety and more convenience based on the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are expected to be introduced in the near future. However, the advent of these products increases the possibility for the electronics devices to be exposed to clock noise or inverter noise, which sometimes poses restrictions on the location of the antennas or the ECUs, or require countermeasure parts for noise reduction. We are developing the technologies for an electronic equipment to operate surely under the noisy situations. A practical demodulation IC for a tuner of the Smart Entry System has been launched as one of the possible applications. The IC removes the unnecessary signal and noise (undesired signal), and then demodulates the original signal received (desired signal).

If TMC manager establishes follow-up project based on the result of economic analysis or before & after analysis without operation evaluation, simple and physical expansion program, or project with similarity or compatibility can be established, still including the existing problems. Daejeon metropolitan city evaluated the first phase project (2002~2006) including ITS Model deployment initiative project(2002) and core equipment about operation and performance in 2007. In addition, based on the result of the evaluation, the modified second project (2008~2012), in addition to the existing Probe car (taxi, bus) as of 2010, the city is proceeding the second project featuring Road Side Equipment(RSE) replacement with Dedicated-Short-Range-Communication(DSRC) capable of collecting traffic information using cars equipped with Hi-pass On Board Unit(OBU) of Korea Expressway Corporation. However, the third project (2013~) should establish through evaluation of operation and performance on the second phase project(2008~2012). So that Daejeon Metropolitan city needs to manage DB such as every evaluation result and benefit, etc.

We proposed new csma retransmission waiting method. It is possible to distribute the retransmission time and keep the performance even if the hidden terminal is increase. Pedestrian terminals periodically transmit their presence information to vehicle for traffic safety. But some terminal transmit their packet simultaneously, collision occurs at reception. Np-CSMA is well known MAC protocol to avoid collision but prone to be affected hidden terminal problem and be delayed by waiting after carrier sense. Simulation Result suggests extreme depression of performance with increasing of hidden terminal and proposal method improve the performance approximately 10% from Slotted np-CSMA.

Currently various activities toward the standardization of the vehicle communication systems are being tested with existing band for 5.8GHz and new frequency band for 700MHz. And now we are working to develop a multi frequency antenna with single feeding point sharing several antennas and cables. One of the developing antenna covers three frequency bands: 700MHz, 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz. This paper discusses the 5.8GHz-band performance in-vehicle use, following the discussion of 700MHz-band performance at 16th ITS World Congress.

The newly developed HILS system is directly connected to the simulation model, and it can be used to evaluate the device or the system through the reciprocal interchange of control data. To verify the reliability of the HILS system, the accuracy of generation and transfer of the detector data between the simulation model and the traffic signal was evaluated using mean absolute error, equality coefficient, and t-test. The test results showed a statistically significant accuracy within a range of 95% reliability level.

This study explored what the factor for the development of mobile device for vehicle is in need to accurately measure the information of GHGs emission from the start to the arrival of the running vehicles, how the system is to be constructed and which effectiveness is to be expected from that system. A sure method calculating GHGs emission for transport sector is to measure GHGs from the beginning to the end of each running vehicle. However it is practically impossible. Moreover statistical distortion can be a problem because of the difference between the areas where fuel is bought and where fuel really is used. Another purpose of this study is to overcome the limitation of the laboratory mode. Although many researches related to GHGs emission coefficient of vehicle have been carried out in the meanwhile, they didn’t reflect the actual road environment, delay/congestion, urban/rural area characteristics, car models, types of fuel etc, and there are constraints of time and money. However, it will be solved all such problems that we have if the mobile device is installed into the car and it also can be checked how different this is between in a laboratory and on a real situation. So various laboratory mode will be better developed based on that.

In Japan, the system will use a region of the 720MHz band from July 2012. Now it is intense that each companies, ministries and institutes start research and development in this field. AISIN have being conducting basic experiments to obtain the delay profiles using Chirp modulation and comprehend signal characteristic in the band. And we could obtain distinctive samples that have impacts of multi path issues. In this paper, we would present prospective problems from the result and consider influence against the conventional communication method.

The CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) access control technique is common for radio systems and it is expected for using IVC. However, throughput characteristics and immediacy of the communications are deteriorated when packet traffic is increased. In this paper, the DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access) and MCS (Multi Code Sense) are used for the IVC system. To adopt those techniques, the packets can be transmitted simultaneously when the spreading codes are different. Moreover, the PN (Pseudo Noise) codes are oriented in the location of the road. And the threshold to detect the packets is derived from the distance between the location of the transmitter in the vehicle and the farthest point in the PN code oriented area. The proposed system has advantage for the hidden terminal problem.

This paper also includes the applicability of the proposed model using real-world data. This research was triggered by the drawbacks of the existing real-time based short-term prediction models, which have been widely applied for single interval predictions. The developed model is based on the Nearest Neighbor Non-Parametric Regression (NN-NPR) using historical and current data collected by DSRC technology. In a practical test with real-time data, the presented prediction model performed effectively in terms of both prediction accuracy and computing time to the degree of the application of real ATIS.

Because NEV cannot accelerate sharply as fast as regular car include gasoline, diesel and LPG cars, they may interrupt traffic conditions and make traffic delay. After green lights turn on, all vehicles run through the street including NEV, but NEV have a maximum speed which is 50km/h. It can be an obstacle for following vehicles and will make traffic delay of the intersection. In this reason, we need to organize traffic systems like queue jump with priority traffic signal. To analyze the necessity for NEV road operations, we simulate two scenarios. First is that we examine the condition which is mixed NEV and cars on the road, and the second one is that we set up lane only NEV can accepted in simulation. In conclusion, we can conclude that NEV only lane and signal is a requirement for effective NEV operation on the street. It can reduce traffic delay of the intersections and be safer for NEV.

Under this background, the governmental authorities concerned and relevant institutions have implemented research on road design elements and safety but lack of criteria that may assess road safety objectively and equipment or program to perform such assessment still remain at such current level in reality. In overseas case, they are applying RSA for the newly planned or constructed roads and RSP is being applied for the existing roads. In the domestic case, RSA is being applied to the expressways but RAP system is not available at all. Under this environment, this study is intended to develop KoRAP system suitable for domestic locality based on RAP system being applied at the overseas construction industry. Road assessment program(RAP) is a program that comparatively assesses safety of existing roads on a road network level and this program is similar to NCAP that grades vehicle safety by number of stars. RAP is divided into riskmap that assesses safety level comprehensively by utilizing existing accident data and road protection score(RPS) that expresses potential prevention of large traffic accident in star grade by scoring head-on collision, road deviation and junction accident. In this study, first, in order to prepare riskmap, number of traffic accident case and traffic volume data for the past 3 years of domestic expressways were utilized and in order to select RPS grade, 88 Olympic Expressway was selected and assessed as a candidate demonstration section. Second, in order to estimate RPS, road facility information of 88 Olympic Expressway was collected by using automatic survey equipment and S/W for quantifying scores of head-on collision, road deviation and

The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. Therefore, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Currently, we are planning to demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Youngdongseon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit. In this study, we investigate target of crossings for demonstration and settled location of train operating room. We also compute power consumption of sub-devices to build not only the way of supply power with needed-power at a spot but the way of communication interface for information transmitted data between devices. Moreover, we would like to set up the installation working procedure of developed product, the list for regular checks and maintenance plan.

As a part of the approach, they have conducted research to create a practical lane utilization rate optimization service for sag sections: locations of frequent congestion on intercity expressways in Japan. They are now performing a proving test on the Yamato Sag on the Tomei (Tokyo ? Nagoya) Expressway to bring this service to the practical application stage. This paper analyzes the results of the proving test, evaluates the service’s effectiveness, verifies the acceptability of the service among drivers, and describes prospects for the adoption of the service as a working system.
