This study suggested scientific methods of analyzing user’s empirical cognition on traffic mode by examining TMV(Transport Mode Value). The concept of TMV defines as the ratio of transport service that users acquire to cost that they pay. The analysis frame is developed by considering customer value and service quality (SERVQUAL) model. TMV is divided into expected value and perceived value, and evaluated by SERVQUAL model. The analysis of TMV indicates that the auto value score is 4.8 times higher than transit value. Path analysis shows that the higher auto value leads the less pressure of gas price and the more will of auto use. Various policy alternatives for modal shift have been made to realize of sustainable transport. But the auto’s mode share has increased mainly due to ignorance in policies about auto value. Sustainable transport strategy should be started with investigating TMV to enhance the efficiency of transportation systems. The TMV survey methods and results could be applied to a decision making system, reducing traffic congestion and decreasing transport-related emissions.

Under the circumstances, it is expected that seamless traffic information regardless of the roadway types should be supplied to the every drivers any time and any where. It is well known fact that integration of existing traffic information system is a crucial prerequisite for the successful implementation of the u-transportation environment. In this context, the purpose of the study is to establish the integrating strategies of traffic information systems by developing evaluation model for level of integration and providing both short and long term feasible policies. Firstly, the study has established a fundamental concept of the nation-wide integrated traffic information system. Secondly, the study has developed a evaluation model for diagnosing of existing systems' integration level. Thirdly, using the UISI, `the national highway traffic information system that has four prefectural regions; Seoul, Iksan, Busan and Daejeon has been evaluated. Lastly, the study proposed both short and long term strategies for accomplishing the integration of traffic information systems and especially emphasized on the importance of cooperation both private and public sector and among the related ministries in the Korean government.

Both theoretical analysis and experiment results have verified that the indoor wireless communication technologies are unable to achieve optimized and robust performance when applied to vehicular communication environments. Moreover, Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication messages must be transmitted in order to provide not only various services but also cooperative driving services with low PER. In this paper, we brief the design of adequate WAVE MAC Scheduler (AWMS) that considers both stable link setup and low packet loss rate in VANET. The AWSM consist of data plane service and management plane service part.

With continuous facility expansion, supplemental S/W and accumulation of operation technology that followed, National Highway ITS is being operated for 2,418km as of December, 2009. National Highway ITS plays a pivotal role in improving effects like directly and indirectly increasing the capacity, decreasing traffic accidents, reducing travel time and reducing environmental pollution in national highways through a process in which various traffic information that occur on national highways are collected, processed and provided. ITS network must be expanded further in the short term to maximize the efficiency of the road network and to provide a convenient traffic service which is the goal that the National Highway ITS project is pursuing. Information for a fixed section or fragmented information simply provide traffic information. They cannot guide drivers who have recognized the information toward a certain direction or provide a path selection service. Therefore, while various routes can be examined as target sections for expanded construction, it is desirable to expand the National Highway ITS System by starting with national expressway bypass roads for which significant effects are expected in the ITS project and then continuing on to principal roads in the metropolitan areas of large cities and national highways linked to principal roads. Ultimately, a traffic information network must be constructed in phases through the ITS system that is connected to bypass national highways of all 7×9 national expressways and key traffic hubs of the five major regional metropolitan areas. The most important factor that must be considered when selecting the target section to expand the National Highway ITS Network in phases is network connectivity. Rather than selecting a section simply because it is a congested section or since an ITS effect is expected, it is desirable to expand the system in phases by considering the overall connectivity or future expandability of the network. In addition, general national highways have a network characteristic that is completely different from national expressways. While national expressways form a linear network that restricts entering and exiting, general national highways form a area centered network for each region since entering or exiting can be done freely by using national expressways or local roads. Since the National Highway Traffic Management System (NHTMS) must also be connected to the Urban Traffic Management System (UTMS) that is being promoted by each local government like the state of the art traffic model city, target section must be selected by considering the ITS plan or projects of the local governments.

Based on the actual data of 2004’s resident trip survey in one metropolis of north China, by using the systematic cluster analysis, thousands of citizens are divided into groups with representative activity-travel patterns according to representative social-economic attributes and activity-travel characteristics. By using the Monte Carlo method, every individual is endowed with a representative activity-travel pattern and the simulation of the activity-travel patterns of the whole urban residents is performed. The result shows that the maximum deviation of simulation ratio of full-time worker’s activity chain and actual ratio is 3.88%. It is the demonstration that simulation of individual representative activity-travel pattern based on systematic cluster analysis and Monte Carlo method is an effective way to gain the classified groups’ activity-travel characteristics.

The bi-modal tram would be driven by CNG hybrid (series type) propulsion. All driving wheels were driven by electrical traction motor-gearbox sets independently, which can eliminate differential gears to reduce turning radius and make low floor to provide the old and the handicapped with easy access. For automatic guidance, and precision docking in stations, the bi-modal tram uses the FROG navigation system which can recognize and calculate tram position, wheel steering angles, vehicle speed and orientation to measure magnets coordinates and polarity installed on the track every 4-5m. The bi-modal tram can also change operation mode (automatic/manual) by tram driver. Since the bi-modal tram is expected to be operated in the downtown area, strong cross wind occurred between high-rise buildings could produce sudden lateral movement (displacement) to influence its automatic operation. For the 3-car articulated bi-modal tram in the automatic operation mode, lateral movements occurred by strong cross wind were analyzed as change of vehicle speed and wind speed in the dynamic model developed by using the ADAMS. And then, safety supervision of cross wind was proposed and discussed for the bi-modal tram in this paper.

Vehicle emissions include pollutants such as heavy metals, oil and grease, particulates from sources such as fuels, brake pad wear, tire wear, and litter. The presence of heavy metals in highway stormwater runoff is of concern, as they are very toxic due to enhanced bioavailability, and have the potential not to degrade in the environment. Therefore, this research was carried out to understand the characteristics of metal pollutants in stormwater runoff from highways in Korea and to treat that runoff using zeolite filtration. The filtration facility was constructed on Korea Highway number 251 (Gaeryong I/C). The facility was operated during storms with durations of 0.3-4.8 hrs, and the influent treatment rate was varied from 3.60~17.34 m3/day. The first flush phenomenon for metal pollutants was observed in all of the storm events. The average removal efficiency was determined to be 62.5 % for TSS, 73.7 % for Cu, 61.8 % for Pb, and 67.3 % for Zn.

Laboratory simulations were conducted to confirm the difference in legibility time for six target signs of different spacing. Also, a binary logit model was used to find the main factors, which could lower the rate of misreading. This model involves not only a simple enlargement of signs but also a suitable match of letters and signs along with the optimal spacing of the text letters on the road signs to increase the legibility of the sign. The result of this study verified the importance of spacing in road signs and proved itself to be an effective method to determine the future standard for the road signs.

In comparison of deteriorated area ratio and EIS results, impedance of coating greatly decreased to 104Ω?? or less when rust and blistering area ratios were more than 0.1% and 3%, respectively. In regression analysis for correlation between deteriorated area ratios and EIS results, impedance and charge transfer resistance decreased as deteriorated area ratios increased with correlation of exponential decay. If EIS data measured for coating applied in fields are accumulated in the future, it is expected that correlation analysis like the method used in this study will make it possible to estimate electrochemical parameters from visual condition of coating surface without measurements.

Travelers are classified into three groups according to information contents which they received before departing or on trip. The first group have no traffic information, so they travel along with fixed route. The second group has real-time shortest path information from travel agency and takes the route. The last group has car navigation system or individual methods such as cell phone, PDA-two way communication for traffic information on trip. So they follow the control of DFS (decentralized feedback strategy) where the control system is operated locally. In order to consider these three groups in a model we propose a multi-class dynamic assignment model. With the proposed model some traffic information strategies are tested and interpreted in terms of ITS (Intelligent transport systems).

However, the sequential huge vehicular traffic has brought people the nightmare of traffic. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) utilizes the advanced communication equipment and information technology to transmit immediate information of the traffic conditions around the road and start the whole statistics at the same time to get the assessment results of the traffic flow and speed of a motor vehicle. Meanwhile, the management units use such information to set up suitable traffic control strategy and measures to enable drivers to avoid the freeway sections of huge traffic flow. To raise the accuracy of the ITS results, we got the driving locus of individual vehicles from the transaction data of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system and fed it into the whole statistics along with the previous assessment results. In this way, we found that the assessment results were even closer to the fact.

The Spatio-Temporal MRF model extracts and tracks foreground objects distinguishing from background scenes by referring to motion difference. During the tracking sequences, cascaded HOG classifiers classify the foreground objects into the two classes of pedestrians and non-pedestrians. Before the classification, geometrical constraints on the relationship between heights and positions of the objects are examined to exclude the non-pedestrian objects. This algorithm can operates quite robustly against noises and classification errors at each image frame.

In these applications, if there are many vehicles broadcast data in a communication area, congestion incurs a problem decreasing communication reliability. We propose autonomous distributed transmit power control method to keep high communication reliability. In this method, each vehicle controls its transmit power using feed back control. And, we evaluate the effectiveness of proposed method using computer simulation.

In this paper, we intend to analyze how a diversion was determined and its effect through correlation analysis between diversion rate estimated by actual survey and the traffic condition. As the result of speed?flow analysis, diversion mechanism was founded. That is, when travel speed was decreased, the detour volume was increased. And then the traffic volume was decreased by increase of diversion and traffic condition got better, the detour volume was decreased again. This study was intended to provide an insight into the changes in the characteristics related to the provision of information by analyzing how the patterns of information utilization change depending on the traffic condition and reclassifying such patterns according to the characteristics of media. Unlike the existing studies, this study adopted the traffic condition, using rate of information media, and the correlation coefficient label as the basis for information media classification, and categorized them into passive utilization media, active utilization media, and past experience in order to ensure the statistical reasonability. The categorized using rate of information media and traffic condition was found to have a positive(+) correlation with the travel speed in the case of passive utilization media during both consecutive holidays(Korea’s traditional Thanksgiving day) and weekends, but had a negative(-) correlation with the positive utilization media and past experience.

Efforts of expressway noise control, such as noise barrier constructions and low noise pavements, should be planned based on the results of methodical and systematic noise monitoring. Long term noise monitoring data determine the method and amount of the noise reduction effort. In this study, we have suggested an Expressway Noise Monitoring System for effective and efficient use of the data on expressway noise management. The monitoring system has consisted of 2 sets of noise measuring system, 1 set of traffic volume measuring system, 1set of weather measuring system and 1 set of site observation system by a digital camera. Data from the system can be saved to the hard disc of the field computer and also be transferred by the wireless LAN to the server system of the office by a wireless LAN. The system measures noise levels, traffic volume and vehicle speed by lane from the expressway and also measures wind speed, atmospheric temperature, humidity, takes pictures of the measuring site simultaneously at real-time. For measuring noise from the expressway, 8 outdoor microphones are set on both side of the road and 4 microphone array is used for one side of the road because of checking the directivity of noise from the expressway. Two monitoring system are set on the different type of pavement road, one is concrete pavement and the other is asphalt concrete pavement for the study.

Realizing a ubiquitous era, that is, the users have access to the information whenever and wherever they desire, requires implementing reformation to lead digital era in collecting information. In other word, it’s necessary for the users to play the supplier’s role for other users, which means the supplier may be switched to the user, besides the division of role as supplier or user. UCC is the good example. YouTube (www.youtube.com), an UCC website in 2005 processed more than 100 million video data and daily users totaled 6 million, which was valued at U$1.6 billion at least. According to Korea Internet & Security Agency, those who used UCC in 2007 reached 83.5%. Many people share the thought that the environment in which the user may collect the traffic information that has been unilaterally centralized to the supplier shall be provided in line with the era when individual's role in creating information is increasingly important. This research thus was intended to propose the technical approach to create the traffic information by individual using WiBro network, a bidirectional wireless Internet and traffic information algorithm to make it public information.

Such reform, of course, was possible thanks to significant development of electronic /system/communication technologies that serve the basis of integrated system such as ITS, and compacted portable terminal and similar media and changed consumers’ demand. Such change of awareness, from service provider or supplier’s standpoint, means the understanding of information has been shifted from the existing frame of ‘traffic information = text’ to the concept of 'traffic information = multimedia contents’ (i.e. visual, audio). Thus the study was intended to propose the urban traffic information collection system using airship from new contents viewpoint. And as part of preliminary study, the limitation of ITS information collection system focusing on rather supplier or operator’s standpoint than user or consumer’s standpoint was proposed, along with the evaluation of the use of aerophoto. The need of aerophoto may be approached from the two standpoints. First, the trend of the customers who retrieve the traffic information. As aforementioned, the current advanced technology led the customers to prefer the picture over the text and prefer the video over the picture. Accommodating the trend is the way for ITS to survive in the new era. Second, the limits of existing detection system which restrains the development of new contents. Generally, the fundamental data of the traffic comprises spot (i.e. volume), link (i.e. density, space and speed) and polygon (i.e. network, demand).

As an important part of this system, Para-transit has important theoretical significance and application significance. Mobility Allowance Shuttle Transit, which is an innovative concept of Para-transit, merges the flexibility of Demand Responsive Transit systems with the low cost operability of fixed-route bus systems. In this paper, we study the multi-vehicle system design problem for MAST, and develop a non-backtracking nearest-insertion algorithm, which is based on the research and analysis on the single-vehicle system. We also compare the performance of the multi-vehicle system with a single-vehicle system by a simulation analysis.

It’s also important for this system to set the driving trajectory in the feedforward control system, which enables vehicles(e.g., truck and bus) to follow the designated course automatically from the departure point to the destination point. This driving trajectory is the 3D geometric curve, which is generated by calculating the 3D road map data(e.g., white line marking, stop line), and includes various attributes like 3D positioning data(e.g., latitude, longitude and altitude), direction, curvature, vertical slope, cumulative distance and the position of informatory sign(e.g., stop line, cross walk). The 3D geometric curve with these attributes is useful for automatic steering control system, which the vehicle can move with safety travel speed, adequate steering angle and so on. In this paper, we propose the geometric curve generation approach, and we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach by applying it to the system and generating the driving trajectory.
