With the goal nearly accomplished, the government announced a new initiative of ‘halving the traffic death to 2,500 in 10 years by 2018”. While traffic deaths are showing decline, additional new measures are required to achieve this target. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) had been witnessing the increase in traffic accidents involving the elderly. As a solution, the MPD introduced signal control (pedestrian/elderly actuated signals to extend seconds for crossing the road) to respond to aging society. However, such signal control had some issues in terms of convenience and flexibility by requiring button operation, fixed green time of pedestrian signals and inability to extend green time once the pedestrian started crossing etc. Recently, the MPD developed a video pedestrian detector that automatically detects pedestrians on the pedestrian crossing and implemented a feature to alert pedestrians when the pedestrian signal is red and a feature to extend the green time in seconds when needed. The video pedestrian detector will be installed at two locations by the end of March 2010 to verify its effect. The deployment of video pedestrian detectors is expected to improve social respect for traffic laws and to prevent traffic accidents, making a part of effective measures in achieving the government target.

We constructed an experimental system in Kanagawa Prefecture by combining IR beacons with DSRC, so that we would be able to make good use of both of them. And then, three patterns of the information provision were prepared for the experiment to verify effective Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for drivers. In this year, we tried to analyze the driver’s operations in different three patterns by compiled the CAN-data of the test car. We then studied the impacts of the experimental system on drivers based on the results of a comparative evaluation of the information provision and timing of messages provided via an on-board unit.

In this study, we use "DSRC Safety Mobile Phone" (DSMP) developed by OKI. The DSMP is a prototyped mobile phone embedded the Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) technology applied to communication between pedestrian and vehicle, and uses mobile phone as platform of safety support application for pedestrian. Firstly we show the PVC system to safety support and the configuration of the DSMP. Secondly we evaluate the data transmission performances of the DSMP under the actual field experiments applying performance criteria based on application requirement of the Advanced Safety Vehicle (ASV) project 4th phase. In addition, we show the DSMP has enough performance to communicate with the vehicles as the ASV. Finally we show the example of application to Honda-powered advanced electric scooter for senior "Monpal ML200" (MONPAL) and the demonstration in "ITS-Safety 2010" using the MONPAL.

However some problems are caused due to the wide-range positioning error for some services as device installation and service place. It is also difficult to be applied to traffic linkage and transfer services because many situations can be happen. So we used 'TOA location surveying mode' based on Time Stamp, which is affected lesser wireless environment interference than 'RSSI mode'. And then we researched more accurate Time Stamping mode to improve surveying accuracy. Though existing Time Stamping only executed at the WLAN MAC layer, this paper researched improve data transmit time accuracy to minimize messages transmit delay for location surveying between MAC and PHY.

In this study, the authors have demonstrated the application of probabilistic dynamic programming for dynamic route guidance with embedded drivers’ route choice behavior within an intercity context. The dynamic nature of consecutive en-route routing behavior is consider as stochastic node-to-node decisions in response to provision of the route guidance information either through VMS or in-vehicle navigation devices. An entire trip can be constructed as a multi-stage decision process such that the corresponded Dynamic Program (DP) is specified and solved. Aggregately, multiple routes can be generated for a given OD trips. The experimental analysis was demonstrated with a north-region intercity network in Taiwan, consisting three major North-South freeways and expressway along with some East-West connectors. A simulation program DynaTAIWAN was implemented to simulate the network performance with this proposed route guidance strategy. Comparison of overall trip time was performed among regular (traditional shortest time based) and optimum routing solutions from probabilistic DP program.

We designed a comparative experiment which was carried out in a test curve road where a SES had been installed. Fifty-five drivers were randomly selected and their driving data, both with and without SES, were recorded and analyzed using surrogate safety indicators when they encountered a randomly located obstacle on the curve road. We find that the brake behavior of all drivers in the experiment can be separated into three categories, which are non-brake, brake at a long distance and brake at a short distance, respectively. Non-brake behavior is the safest while brake at a short distance is the most dangerous. SES can significantly affect the driver percentage in each category by shifting more drivers to the non-brake category (percentage increases by 21.2%). In addition, SES can improve traffic conflict situation. The conflict level with SES rises 2.14, which means drivers are able to get more than 1 second extra action time to handle the incoming obstacle. Moreover, drivers with SES can experience about 10% less time in critical situation than drivers without SES. In conclusion, SES can significantly improve safety of the curve roads with obstacle by positively re-allocating drivers’ brake behaviors, mitigating traffic conflict condition and decreasing drivers’ average speed.

We designed a sensing system that allows any car occupants to feel free to move and behave normally. Piezoelectric-film sensors are embedded in the seat without changing the seating comfort impression of occupants. Unfortunately, it is well-know that piezoelectric sensors are sensitive to vibration, leading to challenging extraction of physiological components. To solve this issue, we combined a denoising and physiological parameter estimation using an Extended Kalman Filter. The pulsation and breathing estimation and tracking is possible with very good performances.

This paper considers the relationship between the look-ahead-distance and the lateral control performance, when the control algorithm is designed with the LQ regulator problem, where a vehicle drives along a straight line. The appropriate coefficients of the performance index depend on the vehicle speed. The optimal look-ahead-distance becomes longer as the vehicle speed becomes higher.

When a vehicle with the unit in the through traffic flow has a certain gap, it widens the gap ahead by reducing the speed to allow the merging. When the mean headway is less than 7 [s], the communication assists a driver on merging, and when the mean headway is less than 4 [s], the penetration rate of more than 50 [%] is required.

Since this Bi-modal tram system detects the sensors installed on the tram route for its automatic operation, the safety of the Bi-modal tram system needs to be secured in case of unexpected disastrous simulation such as torrential rainfall. Thus the Web GIS-based Bi-modal tram disaster management system (BTDMS) was developed in this study for these ends. This system has abilities in retrieving the real-time weather forecast from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) for flooding and forecasting with the Web programming. The BTDMS system with local topography and sewer system information first simulates the rainfall-runoff at all subcatchments defined in the BTDMS, and then simulate flow hydraulics within the sewer system for possible urban flash flooding for a certain period time at subcatchments within the Bi-modal tram route and surrounding catchments. The Bi-modal tram operation can be rescheduled or re-directed to other safe routes in real-time using the simulated result of this system. The Web GIS-based BTDMS system can be easily applied to other Bi-modal tram route and utilized for other transport facilities.

With the development of science and technology, intelligence and networking are the development trend of modern road lighting management system, which has set a higher requirements for the road traffic safety, environmental protection and energy saving. The current road lighting devices are isolated from each other and may be described as the Information Island, obviously which can not meet those demands. In this paper it is discussed that the intelligent road lighting management system (IRLMS) based on the Internet of Things (a network of Internet-enabled objects, together with web services that interact with these objects) and 3S technique (the integration system of the geographic information system (GIS), global positioning system (GPS) and remote sensing (RS)). Brought into the Internet of Things, each of the road lighting becomes one of the nodes in the network and may share information from each other, so which make it possible by carrying out the dynamic and optimal management for the road lighting. The main contents are discussed in this paper as follows: (1) Design of the conceptual model of the IRLMS (2) Analysis of the key techniques for IRLMS such as the Internet of Things and 3S (an integration system of the GIS, GPS and RS) (3) Introduce of the test case of the IRLMS in Fushan city, Guangdong province, China The test shows that IRLMS may reduce operating costs, conserve energy and minimize light pollution effectively.

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) can be provide increased safety, lowered cost, increased comfort, or have a greater efficiency. In recently years, telematics is a hot topic in the ITS industry. In order to support various telematics services to drivers and passengers, the most important thing is the technique transmitting and receiving high capacity multimedia data with real time in the vehicle moving fast. Ultra wideband (UWB) technology is a promising candidate for short-range and high-throughput wireless communications, because of its several advantages. One of them is the potential for very high data rate at low power implementation. Another merit is the robustness to severe multipath conditions. And the other is the possibility for real time sub-decimeter positioning. By applying UWB to vehicle wireless communications, it is possible that data communications of high data rate and various telematics services.

By then, one out of every five residents will be a senior resident. With lower mobility, the elderly are a vulnerable group of users on the roads. Singapore recognises this fact and is constantly making its transportation infrastructures more elderly friendly to allow senior residents to live independently and to continue to engage actively in the society. Such an enabling environment must provide senior residents with safe unhindered access from homes to public amenities, communal and recreational facilities. On the other hand, there is a need to ensure that the needs of other road users, such as motorists, are not adversely sacrificed when meeting the needs of the elderly. In this Green Man Plus project, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) uses technology to help the elderly cross the road more safely without adversely affecting the traffic flow. This paper presents the overview and experience of the implementation of the Green Man Plus system.

Technology for safe driving has been continuously improved by providing live information to driver and vehicle in real time.Such information includes static and dynamic traffic conditions of highway and the parameters related to the road. Even a well-skilled driver needs to be informed not only the traffic condition but also the simple road geometry like road curvature when he is under inclement weather. This paper is related to discrimination of traffic lane departure using DGPS by measuring the distance between a vehicle and the traffic lane. RTK method is used to guarantee the error of DGPS position data is under 20cm. The relative position of the vehicle within a lane can be obtained by comparing the measured DGPS data and the lane curve data that is modeled with the GIS data of the driving road. This positioning information is essential factor for safe driving and preventing the vehicle from careless departure from the one lane to another. With proper prediction algorithm using the measured position data and its derivatives with the lane curve data, the driver can drive more safely because he can get more information such as road curvature, slope, and the rate of deviation of the vehicle from the lane and the proximity to other vehicles. Also it will be helpful to establish the foundation of the intelligent future vehicle development with the autonomous driving supporting information system.

Global positioning systems (GPS) based traffic surveillance systems are capable of producing individual vehicle speeds that are invaluable for various traffic management and information strategies. This study proposes a locally weighted regression (LWR) based filtering method for individual vehicle speed data. Both a technique to generate synthetic outliers and two approaches to injecting synthetic outliers are also presented to systematically evaluate the proposed method. A method to determine parameters associated with the LWR that affect the smoothing performance is devised and applied to obtain more reliable data correction. A set of illustrative evaluation examples explains that the proposed method is useful in filtering individual vehicle speed data. For the purpose of the performance comparison, an exponential smoothing method was adopted and evaluated. It was identified that the proposed LWR-based method outperformed the exponential smoothing method in performance evaluations.

Therefore, the use of systems to control aeronautical or cosmonautical situation is necessary. However, abnormal actions caused by system failures may result in disaster. In this paper, we are focusing on a system for air traffic control. In case of conventional flight data processing system, if the primary node system fails, the stand-by node system receives the service transferred from the primary node and continues the remaining job. While transferring the service to stand-by node system, down time of the system occurs. To solve this problem, studying methods of minimizing system down time of conventional system to enhance efficiency and reliability of the system is necessary. In this paper, we propose schemes for improvement of the input module of fight data processing system by letting two active systems to receive identical input data simultaneously or sequentially and continue their tasks. By doing so, in spite of primary node system failure, the other active node system receives the transferred service and continues the execution, minimizing system down time. To maintain consistency between two active node systems, heartbeat message is sent to each other periodically through group communication. This enables synchronization between two systems. Enhancing availability is possible by sending periodic Heartbeat messages for checking the system status or for letting systems to switch as quickly as possible in case of failure. We propose three schemes to send identical input data to two primary node systems simultaneously or sequentially.

The conventional travel time information estimated by the loop detector speed has an inaccuracy during a queue is growing or shrinking on motorways because of the measurement delay. Therefore, it must be followed by an appropriate prediction method to compensate the measurement delay. So far, we have studied about the pattern matching and the time series data analysis with AR (auto-regression) model (H.Otaka et. al. [1]), using cumulative flow curves (original method). In this study, some methodologies improving the accuracy of the predicted travel time are outlined. Using the new methodologies, the accuracy of the travel time prediction is considerably improved. , , ,

In general GPS/DR Integration system, DR sensor errors are GPS information corrects the when GPS is available. In GPS signal blockage area, i.e., tunnel and underground parking area, DR sensor errors are accumulated and navigation solution is diverged eventually. We utilize the car driving information and area decision algorithm to reduce accumulated DR sensor error. The vehicle driving information is the current car movement and is obtained by analyzing the DR sensor data. The car movement is divided straight line, turn and movement changing region. The car experiment is performed to verify the supposed method. The results show that supposed method provides small position and heading error than previous method. When GPS is blocked in 300 sec, the position error is smaller than 10 times in straight line area and 3 times in turn area.

However, revenue allocation by finalizing standard transportation cost accounting has brought out decreases of service frequency, a spread of drivers' egotism and managers' carelessness. It has been happened diseconomy that service hasn't improved to be caused inconvenience of bus user as increasing headway. It has been occurred imbalance of demand and supply because 130 bus lines in Busan have been operated to average headway change of about 10.0% ranges between 12.0 minutes in peak times and 13.2 minutes in non peak, but it has come about bus user demand's change of about 62.4% ranges. Therefore, this study explores a way to control more flexible bus headway to provide reduction of operation costs to private bus companies and a better service quality of urban transportation system to citizens. For doing this study, we make use of BIMS(Bus Information Management System) data.

To enlarge service zone, Roadside Equipments(RSEs) have to be installed. However, high installation expense is the most critical problem for the service zone extension. Many researchers in the world are studying about Vehicle to Vehicle(V2V) communications to solve this problem. Dedicated Short Range Communication(DSRC) that is one of the communication technologies for ITS, provides wireless link between RSE and Onboard Equipment(OBE) in the range of 10m - 100m. DSRC infrastructure also has the installation expense problem to extend service zones. V2V communication is good solution to extend the capability of the extant DSRC system. In this thesis, we implemented a V2V DSRC OBE Medium Access Control(MAC) algorithm to provide V2V communication. Since the DSRC is a master-slave communication system, an OBE does not have a function to transmit the Field Control Message Channel(FCMC). To provide V2V communications, this thesis suggests an additional function for the FCMC transmission to a DSRC Mobile MAC(M-MAC) algorithm. The DSRC M-MAC algorithm for V2V is implemented through the Verilog-Hardware Description Language(HDL). The operational characteristics of the DSRC M-MAC algorithm supporting both V2I and V2V communications were tested. The tested operational characteristics are reception of Activation channel(ACTC) between a commercial RSE and the developed OBE, transfer of ACTC between the developed OBE and a commercial OBE, transfer and reception of V2V message data between the developed OBEs.

Thereby, the current uniform data ‘FUSION’ may bring forth the situation where the high-quality of traffic information can not be generated. Therefore, this research proposes the separate data FUSION algorithm better suited for the conditions such as on-the-spot status of collection equipments or alike.

In this paper, we investigated an alternative technique to automatically classify bus positioning from cellular probe data in each mobile service provider using decision tree and the artificial neural network models. By the method of bus tracking using cellular network infrastructure is installed in the bus that requires tracking. Cellular network based location services are used for tracking data by comparing the positioning results of bus with actual positioning results from Global Positioning System that matching with link-id of each bus stop. The learning parameters were heuristically optimized to gain highest prediction accuracy. The outcomes were a practical method using the decision tree model of mobile service provider of AIS achieving as high as 88.50% accuracy. The model was then compared to data test set; we found that accuracy was 81.52%. The analysis revealed that the derived model classified bus positioning based mainly on the Cell Identification. The methodology for use in route of Chula-shuttle bus can be applied to the route of bus other in the world using cellular network infrastructure.

From the results, three factors were identified regarding the cognitive time needed for an automotive interface system: eye movement, accommodation and vergence response, and magnification and mapping. First, issues involved in automotive ARIS applications were considered with respect to each factor. Second, assuming application of a display system for navigation or route guidance, reaction times were measured and analyzed for tasks in which subjects pointed out visual targets displayed in a forward view. The contribution rate of each of the three factors was estimated. Finally, a model of the cognitive process in the case of ARIS was created.
