This study proposed an algorithm that delivers accident information swiftly to driver behind in case traffic accident occurs, and calculates the risk degree of serial collision in current driving condition under the assumption that wireless communication service using wireless broadband communication is established on the highway. Furthermore, through the comparison of the result values with the use of the proposed algorithm, maximum tolerance value of delay time by system and driver reaction was estimated. This study used vehicle speed, acceleration and location as input information, and utilized separation distance by the final stopped location of the vehicle as risk degree determinant information. In the simulated experiment, total delay time was divided into the system delay time by accident detection and delay time by communication speed and driver recognition reaction, and by varying delay time values, results values were compared. As a results, it was estimated that in case total delay time exceeds 2 seconds, driver in the rear cannot prevent accident even after receiving the information.

Consecutive vehicle crash prevention using wireless communication consists of crash detection and accident information delivery to drivers. The latter can be achieved through vehicle to infra-structure (V2I) or vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications. In V2I communications, center-based or local-based accident handling can be considered. This paper proposes new approach to prevent vehicle crash using V2I communications, local-based accident handling, and anycast/multicast communication. This reduces traffic between on-board units(OBU) and accident handling servers and delivers emergency information to cars behind, that accident can be happen, stably and simultaneously. We verify the network architecture, requirements and technical feasibility based on testbed.

Those are TPEG, UTIS. It is not easy to provide a service in terms of every road in the whole country based on the records in every minute or second as they gather the record only in the capital or metropolitan area. To solve this critical problem, a smart phone with WCDMA can collect the traffic records and process it. The traditional TPEG and UTIS systems, however, have difficulty managing it because this plan needs to process massive traffic data at national level. In this paper, a system architecture that gathers, saves and processes traffic data on the basis of WCDMA is suggested.

In this research, effect of using vehicular ad-hoc networks for increasing average speed of drivers’ is studied. A microscopic model has been proposed based on the optimization process of drivers' for increasing speed. This model has been simulated by a cellular automata simulator and compared with the real data. It has been shown that there is no reason to consider the model invalid for drivers' behavior in Iran. The proposed model is used for studying the effect of using vehicular ad-hoc networks on traffic parameters. It has been shown that, using vehicular ad-hoc networks the average speed in the freeways can be increased during non-congested traffic conditions.

In the UWB literature, extensive analyzing work has been done for indoor and outdoor propagation, but very few analyses were investigated for intra-vehicle environments. This paper aims to analyze the performance of UWB propagation for intra-vehicle Networked Control System (NCS). A typical NCS includes two scenarios, one for communication that is undertaken beneath the chassis and another for transmitting and receiving terminals that are positioned within the engine compartment. To evaluate the performance of UWB propagation, we use the recently proposed channel models for intra-vehicle environment, those that are based on the IEEE 802.15.3a standard. Through simulations the bit error rate (BER) performance against the signal to noise ratio (SNR) under different intra-vehicle environments are shown. We also compare the UWB propagation performance of intra-vehicle communications and that of indoor/outdoor environments.

Accordingly, each body verified accuracy on the basis of its own criteria. However, the Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs (MLTMA) developed a system of evaluation criteria in 2006 and established the "ITS Evaluation & Certification Outline" and started evaluation and certification for field equipment, for example, vehicle detectors in 2008 after a pilot operation period. We cannot overemphasize the importance of accuracy evaluation in traffic information. Required is the great effort of the institutions of managing and operating the ITS facilities so that evaluation and certification which just started can contribute to improving data accuracy and scientific maintenance and perfectly operate. In this study, I present some problems in the field discovered in ITS evaluation and certification which has been carried out for 2 years. Checking difficulty in data collection on a spot depending on various road conditions, I will present needs for improving spot evaluation equipment for carrying out more efficient ITS evaluation and certification.

The analyzer visually checks the video recorded by a high-resolution camera to classify the class of a vehicle. However, it is not considered a good method because it takes a long time for classification in that all of the data for the class of individual vehicles must be manually entered after visually checking the class of vehicles. Also, there is a possibility of the longer the time for visual checking by an analyzer, the less accuracy in vehicle classification. Therefore, in this study, I propose an AVCES (Automatic Vehicle Classification Evaluation System) which can easily and accurately carry out vehicle classification evaluation. With this system, it is expected that ITS evaluation and certification will be carried out more efficiently and reliably.

However, there are lots of vehicle crashes and some of them are happened by highway design problems even though the highways were built by general design guidelines. It has been known that crashes are mainly caused by human errors not by design problems. Therefore safety evaluation of designed highway layouts is a very important process using historical safety data. Through this study, a safety evaluation system based on historical accident data was developed. First of all, accident prediction models were developed for various types of highways, and then the safety evaluation system which enable to evaluate safety level for designed highways and provide the results using visualized methods. A core of the safety evaluation algorithm is AMFs, which means a relative effect of geometric conditions on frequency of vehicle crashes. Using this system, the highways that will be constructed can be checked the safety problems and improved before construction. In addition, preliminary safety check in the design step, the additional cost to improve highway conditions after vehicle crashes happened can be reduced.

The microwave radiometer measures the natural thermal radiation from the terrestrial atmosphere and the road surface and it can detect the status of road by the measurement of emissivity. There are several reasons to use microwave for remote sensing of road surface compare with IR or visible camera. The most important reasons are their capability to penetrate clouds, fog, and rain with small attenuation. Additionally, microwave remote sensing is not dependent on the sun as source of illumination. The information observed by visible and infrared radiation mainly determines the molecular resonance in the surface layer of the soil, whereas the information observed by microwaves determines geometric and bulk-dielectric properties of the surface or volume studied. In this paper, the theoretical analysis of water emissivity and dielectric characteristics are investigated to monitor the water layer on the road surface. Theoretical calculation of water emissivity and derived and the result is validated by the experiment in indoor and outdoor.

Thus it demands the development of low-cost, low-weight interconnection with ever-increasing transmission speed. Plastic optical fiber (POF) is the most likely candidate for in-vehicle networks, due to its high-speed, low-EMI, low-cost characteristics. Figure 1 shows the block diagram of a fiber optic transmission system. In fiber optic transmission system, the most important parameters are their cost and current consumption. Thus, fiber optic transceiver for POF should have simple structure, while being satisfied with system requirements such as digital I/O level, the large range of operating frequency, and the large input dynamic rage. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of fiber optical transceiver for in-vehicle networks using low-cost standard CMOS technology. In-vehicle network systems require low cost, stable, and robust interconnection. Fiber optic transmitter has to provide stable and constant output optical power with respect to internal PVT (process, voltage, and temperature) variations and external environments, such as temperature and age. In the receiver side, the pulse-width distortion is the main performance factor to determine the quality of the transmission signal. Proposed fiber optic transmitter and receiver can operate up to 50-Mb/s of bit rates and consume only 20-mW and 12-mW for a 3.3-V single supply voltage, respectively.

The diffusion rate, however, is expected to increase up to 27.7% by 2012 (2) in the world with the expansion of technology and wide recognition. At the same time, there are few such previous studies or clear direction on which region or area the CNS would possibly widespread or become very convenient. In this study by socio-economic policy methodology, therefore, we would like to find out the condition for diffusion of CNS by comparing the diffusion rate of CNS, the total road length, the number of car registration, and the average income in each prefecture and etc in Japan. In addition, by looking at the region where they make an effective use of CNS, we would like to achieve result to improve efficiency on urban traffic all over the world with green ITS under inter-modal community.

This topic has received a significant amount of attentions from researchers worldwide. However, few experiences are available about implementing a real responsive VSL system backed with advanced control algorithms that can take consideration of real-time traffic conditions. This paper presents the structure and algorithm of the VSL implemented on MD100 in Maryland, USA. The purpose of this system is to smooth the transition area between uncongested and heavily-congested segments more effectively so as to reduce the potential risk caused by sudden slow down, and improve the stop-and-go conditions. This system collects the data from traffic detectors and License Plate Recognition (LPR) systems in its real-time operation. The overall condition of the control segment and segment-by-segment conditions are estimated with travel time data and road-side detector data. The speed limits at two VSL stations are determined by the combination of pre-planned scenarios and real-time adjustment. This paper also provides detailed analysis of drivers’ responses to the displayed speed limits.

The convenience of such system has attracted a lot of frequent users. For example, the percent of bus passengers holding smart cards is almost 65% in the city of Jinan, China by the end of 2009. The log of payment activities is a rich source for transit planners’ decision support. However, the most important information, Origin-Destination (OD) matrix of passenger demands of each bus route, cannot be easily determined because only boarding information is recorded on buses with fixed fares. This paper mainly focuses on providing an improved approach for estimating the passenger demand OD matrix for each bus route. First, necessary data filtering technique is applied to process the smart card data. Then, OD matrix of passenger trip is obtained by considering the connectivity and walking distance of individual transfer. Finally, passenger OD matrix for each bus route is estimated individually. Experiments were carried out with smart card data collected in Jinan, China on July 7, 2009. Results showed that the proposed approach provided a success rate of 75% in average for route OD matrix estimation, while reaching 85% in peak hours. The computed OD matrix is valuable to support trip demand estimation, bus dispatching and route optimization for planners and decision-makers.

At the same time, the number of traffic accidents and violation of traffic regulations now increasing resulted from drivers’ attention distraction when they are using the devices. In particular, since the in-vehicle display devices such as navigation temporally distracts driver’s visual or cognitive attention when they perform a unit task, drivers cannot help keeping eyes on a series of unit task to be completed. Accordingly, it is necessary to prepare adequate standards to make a guideline, especially in Korea. There are few empirical studies that employed experiments to support the rule of it. In this study, an experiment was conducted, using a driving simulator, to establish the proper standard of maximum distraction time per unit task to the extent that the in-vehicle display devices do not cause any hindrance on safe driving. A total of 25 participants participated in the experiment. Distraction span was manipulated by asking participants to perform the two tasks at once: while participants were driving as a primary task, they performed secondary task that counts the number of intersections in between the start point and the arrival point displayed on the screen. The results showed that the 2.0 second condition differed from the control condition in the deviation of distance from the car ahead, speed deviation, and the deviation in steering wheel, whereas there were no differences between the control condition and 1.0 or 1.5 second condition. Finally, limitations of the study, and implications of the findings with regards to the future studies and application of the Korea version of guideline for the in-vehicle display devices are discussed.

And, also we need to take an effor to save energy in the field of transportation. And also, we need to reply to the new needs of transportation. Therefore, it is urgent to improve transportation systems into low greenhouse gases, energy savings, and green growth oriented transportation systems. Intermodalism is a new paradigm for the new era of transportation systems. Intermodalism can make it possible to move people and freights from one place to another in the most efficient ways with two or more transport modes in a manner of low greenhouse gases and energy consumption. Intermodalism can reduce the dependancy on private automobiles and trucks for transporting passengers and freights. For implementing intermodalism, measures should be considered from many aspects. Firstly, network should be constructed efficiently for various modes. Secondly, physical facilities should be improved. Thirdly, fare system should be constructed integratedly. Forth, information system should be constructed efficiently. Lastly, institutional system should be prepared propely. The role of ITS for intermodalism is very important in many ways. ITS is especially important in software systems for intermodalism. For efficient operations of intermodal facilities, fare systems, and information systems, ITS can have an important role in implementing Intermodalism. This paper may search more various aspects of ITS for implementing intermodalism in the future.

Since there is no compatibility between transmission equipment from different manufacturers that are used by Korea Expressway Corporation, each ring must be
organized with equipment from the same manufacturer and defective equipment cannot be replaced with equipment from a different manufacturer. In addition, there is no compatibility even between equipment from the same manufacturer since there are differences in card size and standards. Because shelf and card size are different, rack standard also differs. This makes it difficult to find a location inside each rack. By promoting compatibility for each manufacturer and standardization of the cards, compatibility problem will be solved. By standardizing the cards, indiscriminate equipment abuse will be prevented and efficient management will become possible.
