CCTV net is being changed from existing closed circuit television analog nets to digital nets for sharing images. Fiber optic cable used for sharing images in regular analog CCTV cameras or sharing analog images that have been encoded into digital form leads to image degradation as division and amplification processes are repeated. In order to share CCTV screens of identical image quality without the image degradation of analog CCTVs, a system for sharing images that uses digital CCTVs is needed. In this material, the expressway monitoring system that utilizes CCTV in all regions of the nation by using HD grade digital cameras that were installed by Korea Expressway Corporation will be introduced.

The more people there are, the more damage they do through pollution. Effects: Pollution can kill or sicken plants, animals, and people. Pollution can change the environment. Pollution can get into the air. Air pollution can irritate people’s lungs. Polluted air can mix with rain to make acid rain. Acid rain kills trees and harms fish in lakes. Pollution can also get into soil and water. From there, pollutants can get into the food chain. Solutions: Governments can pass laws that forbid or limit the use of chemicals that cause pollution. Laws can stop factories from dumping poisonous chemicals in lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Engineers can build cars that burn less gasoline. Scientists are looking for fuels to replace coal and oil. They are looking for ways to use the power in wind and in rays from the Sun. We can help cut down on the amount of garbage we make. We can recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, and metal cans. Recycled material gets used over again. Recycling helps cut down on pollution. Conclusion: The future is not all doom and gloom. Humans are very inventive and intelligent, as well as very destructive and careless. If we understand that our environment is fragile, then we can all help to save it, and the precious and life-giving resources that it provides.

Potential danger of small sign supports when rigidly connected to concrete footing was studied by LS-DYNA simulation and side impact crash test. To reduce the potential danger of rigidly connected small sign post, V-notch groove was suggested along the barrel of the pipe with holes as a fracture initiator. From the 40km/h side impact and heard on impact tests, performance of the proposed breakaway function was proven. For the easement of installation and replacement of the sign after an impact, socket with V-notched groove was developed.

The SDAS functions include lane position indication, lane departure warning, road dangerous position warning and obstacle warning. Lane position indication and lane departure warning were performed by using embedded magnetic reference marker system for lateral position indication within the lane. Meanwhile the location based service (LBS) technology using GPS had also been applied to the SDAS. It could provide the lane position indication, lane departure warning and road dangerous position warning function for the driver under the low visibility conditions. In order to implement obstacle warning, we used millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles and other inorganic objects buried or obscured by snow. Millimeter wave radar has the good ability to measure the accurate distance to an object and is robust in bad weather, but a large number of false alarms in practice were its deadly defect. For the purpose of reducing the false alarm, we proposed a new filter method and extensive experimental results proved that this method significantly improved detection rate. The SDAS has been applied in the Northern China and can be introduced to other provinces. So the SDAS is valuable for public safety in the future.

Also, the analysis on the vehicles showed that cars occupied 33.0%, trucks 20.5%, and buses 14.3%. Among these factors, the installation of superelevation was estimated as the most influential factor on big traffic accidents. Secondly, by applying the Ordered Probit Model to 112 big traffic accidents, the Severity Model of Big Traffic Accidents was developed. The developed model helps predict the roads with high risks of big traffic accidents and come up with the strategies to reduce the severity of damages. Third, in the computer simulations where superelevation, the most influential factor on big traffic accidents, was adjusted at 2~6%, the installation of superelevation prevented big traffic accidents on more than 80% of the previous accident spots. And this result urges that the exceptional regulations on superelevation installation should be reinforced added to the standard principles of the road structure and facilities. Lastly, it is estimated that the damage cost of the big traffic accidents in 2003 has been reduced by 89.0% compared to the cost from 2005 to 2007 due to the installation of superelevation. Even when the damage cost of big traffic accidents in 2003 is compared with the installation cost of superelevation, the result shows the improvement over 3 times.

In order to achieve the safe and efficient surface of the road, overall investigations after construction and every year inspection are performed. For maintenance of the pavement, inspections with 7.6 profilermeter or ARAN(Automatic Road Analyzer) are used, but they are not suitable for local in situ monitoring of the roughness of pavement while they are widely used for long range roughness of pavement. Therefore in this research, as in situ monitoring of roughness of pavement, we propose the vibration monitoring method using fiber optic sensors. We designed and produced prototype fiber optic vibration sensor packages. We had a laboratory impact test with the sensors. The sensors showed very good responsibility to the impact and nice damping shape like other ordinary accelerometers. We also tried actual road test with the prototype vibration sensor. The ambient vibration by the vehicles was used for the experiment. We install the vibration sensors to the curbs. The data showed the good vibration patterns due to vehicles very clearly.

Aimed at the features of non-linear characteristics, being prone to external disturbance and parameter uncertainty of clutch, it is difficult to control automated clutch engaging and disengaging process of Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Here, regarding a dry clutch system with Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDCM) as the research subject, a sliding mode variable structure is adopted to realize the effective control of clutch displacement and the phenomenon of clutch chattering is alleviated by fuzzy controller. The simulation results show this sliding mode controller have a better displacement trace ability and robustness to the parameters variation compared to traditional PID control.

The developed unmanned vehicle is controlled by a driving robot which can be rapidly installed in various types of automobiles with minor modification. The driving robot is consisted of accelerator/brake actuators, a steering actuator, a gearshift actuator, motor controllers, a main controller and wireless communication systems. The unmanned vehicle has three modes - remote control mode, replay mode and automatic path following mode. The speed control algorithm and the path following algorithm used for the unmanned vehicle are presented in this paper. The dynamic behavior of the unmanned vehicle is acquired from DGPS based RTK(Real-Time Kinematics) equipments without additional sensory systems, so the algorithms can be applied to different automobiles with various dynamic characteristics. The developed algorithm is tested through computer simulations and T-car test in the field. The T-car test was conducted in the PG(Proving Ground) of KATECH. The developed unmanned vehicle successfully demonstrated the reliable repeatability of path following with a considerable speed.

As it is possible to implement two-way communication of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) from the ubiquitous transportation environments, it is possible to respond to interaction among individual vehicles. However, since field test for the ubiquitous transportation environments is not possible at present, it is desirable to use a microscopic traffic flow simulation for the research process of model reproducibility and validity verification, effect analysis of transportation operation and management strategies and the like. That is, since the ubiquitous-based transportation service infrastructure is built up, it is possible to use the microscopic traffic flow simulator which can do various simulations for the demand-oriented operation and management strategies and can implement transportation environments over control of individual vehicles. This paper proposes a development of microscopic traffic flow simulation test-bed which can be used in establishing various operation and management strategies to be applied to minimizing traffic congestion of uninterrupted flow and to keeping stable traffic flow under the ubiquitous transportation environments and used for effect analysis. It is decided that the implementation of simulation test-bed environment based on ubiquitous transportation can provide an analysis environment in which various experiment and researches can be carried out in terms of traffic flow and safety by properly responding to interaction among individual vehicles based on V2I and V2V communication.

However, image detector also in reality is facing the emerging performance related problem such as responding too sensitively to weather, environment, etc. In order to improve the quality of traffic information, we intend to utilize identification information obtained from DSRC-based wireless communication terminal which is mounted on board of car and communicates with the road side equipment of electronic toll collection system, called Hi-Pass system in Korea, of roadside. Since Hi-Pass service start of operation in June 2005, Hi-Pass terminals were set up 3.4 million units and the rate of Hi-Pass traffic is up to 40% of highway traffic as of Nov. 2009, and in the case of capital region toll gates, the rate of use reaches as much as 50%, one car per every two cars. In this paper, we analyze sample size that is needed to provide real time traffic information by using real experiment in metropolitan area, and evaluate the effects by comparison with results obtained using the conventional system.

The traffic data collected on an actual road network are sent to the TMC for collection and then provided to various information provision media (Traffic information board, VMS, ARS, etc.) through primary and secondary information processing. However, accuracy for the traffic information extracted from such systems has not been clearly known, and one of the main reasons results from reliability for ground truth (GT). In order to verify accuracy and reliability for the traffic information processed in the TMC, microscopic traffic flow simulation will be used as GT, unlike the general methods. This paper proposes using microscopic traffic flow simulation as an alternative for improving the limitations in the ground truth survey (GTS). The main objective of this paper is to examine a feasibility of microscopic simulation in order to improve the reliability for the GTS. The microscopic traffic flow simulation can extract vehicle detection data through simulation considering various traffic environments. In particular, the simulation is advantageous in that it is possible to extract spot traffic data, space traffic data, vehicle trajectory data and the like by preparing various scenarios considering detection system types, traffic, geometry, signal operation, etc. Therefore, it is decided that the microscopic simulation would be highly usable as an alternative to the GTS in terms of efficiency and reliability if it simulates the traffic situation in the real world as similar as possible.

This is called "fuel-cut function" and almost every modern vehicle is equipped with this function. This is activated on downhill part of roads most often. Therefore the vehicle exhausted CO2 can be zero if the driver could recognize this downhill part of roads. The reduction rate of CO2 using this fuel-cut function in the downhill part of two different roads was measured in this study. The reduction rate is about 4% and this rate could be higher if optimized for different declined angle or the length of downhill part of roads. And this fuel-cut driven part of roads can be used in road painting policy for reduction of vehicle exhausted CO2.

Significant budget are allocated to the main road construction projects every year in Iran. However, the assigned value is obviously less than the required budget to implement all projects. As a result of this, the optimal distribution of credits among the candidate projects and electing the prior projects to implement is considered as a serious problem. If the candidate projects are implemented based on a precise prioritization, the maximum efficiency of assigned budgets and credits can be acquired. It is clear that to achieve the best alternative for implementation, the candidate projects should be compared with one another. Although analyst can prioritize a few projects with small number of criteria subjectively; however, it is impossible when many projects or criteria are taken into account. In this situation, one should utilize the prioritization techniques to determine project’s precedence based on the criteria affecting on the prioritization. This research aims to present a methodology to prioritize the main road construction projects in the ministry of road and transportation. For this, first, the criteria affecting on the prioritization are identified and then an appropriate multi criteria decision making technique is utilized to determine the precedence of the main road construction projects. A prototype was implemented in this research to determine the project ranks base on many criteria information as input.

As lifestyles have changed, so have forms of travel. Currently, there is a shift toward forms of tourism that offer a high degree of freedom, such as away from group travel towards individual travel and away from public transportation towards private automobile transportation. Such changes require a diversification of services. This paper focuses on efforts facilitating car-based tourism, which is expected to be the primary mode of tourism into the future. We examine problems related to car-based tourism and suggest possible ways for using intelligent transport systems (ITS) as new tools for facilitating tourism-related services. We also examine and consider a service model that will ensure the satisfaction of both visitors and recipients.

The visual abilities relate to vision, visual field, adaptation and daze. In fog, no matter how much high their vision may be, it is impossible for drivers to take a visual field forward, and then they are likely to be the blind. That is why it appears to have the high rate of rear-end collisions in a foggy weather. Since a visual distance is changed every moment in fog, it is the most important to effectively provide drivers the information of the road. The Fog Detect & Warning System (FDWS) comprises a visibility meter, a warning lamp, a vehicle detector, and control algorithm. This study estimated the effectiveness of FDWS on speeds according to several conditions (visibility distance and the system on and off). FDWS which was implemented in the four-lane divided National Highway 37, Gyeong Gi-Do South Korea is additionally equipped with a leading vehicle control and control system.

The transportation sector contributes approximately 30% of the total energy usage, which is mostly attributed to petroleum-based products such as gasoline and diesel fuels. Also, significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions that linked to climate change, are attributed to the transportation sector. However, it would be difficult to imagine our modern life without motorized transportation. One of the key strategies in improving vehicle fuel efficiency is obtaining more miles from each liter of fuel. Eco-driving was emerged as a tool that can improve actual fuel efficiency. While there are different ways to evaluate the smart driving techniques of eco-driving, there are a limited numbers of studies that quantified the benefits of eco-driving on the fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. This study examines the energy and environmental impact of eco-driving techniques using traffic simulation models in combination with state of the art fuel consumption and emission models. The results conclude that eco-driving may result in positive impacts on vehicle fuel consumption and emission rates if drivers do not use aggressive acceleration levels to speed up to their desired speeds. The results also demonstrate that by eliminating sharp acceleration maneuvers significant energy and emission savings can be achieved. Consequently, significant improvements in air quality and energy consumption are achievable through driver education.

However, what is the impact of the new VMS is not clear. This study employed 1075 questionnaires to investigate effects of VMS on route choice. Firstly, a statistical analysis of questionnaire data, which used multi-category ordinal logistic models, revealed that those who highly trust, frequently concern VMS will change route frequently according to VMS. Secondly, multiple linear regression models were developed to reveal that the information of original path, substitution path and high-grade path will affect significantly the probability of route diversion. Thirdly, a survey of drivers’ actual responses to new VMS showed that more than 80% drivers think that new VMS is useful and 73% drivers trust the information. The paper will provide scientific suggestions on the assessment of new VMS.
