While in motion, both customers and managers are unable to know the vehicles position immediately, then some problems frequently happened such as cargo detention delivery, and unable to arrange the temporary order. There is no efficient management system in terms of vehicles over speed, halting pass time limit, and falling off the assigned travel routes. For long time, most drivers always try their luck, they do not drive according to the stipulations, then the traffic accident rate remains high, and enterprise goodwill are affected, the above situations make the transport business even more difficult. We will discuss how to combine the spacial information and wireless technology in this article, to help the transport industry to resolve the above mentioned problems, and provide the CVO system in accordance with standards of transportation service industry. The system will provide planning before transportation, real-time monitoring during transportation, traffic exception management, and reduce the total mileage, and provide the operation analysis after transportation, help transport service industry managers make decisions, and increase operation efficiency and lower cost, then help the proprietor resolve the problems and enhance the driving efficiency and security, in order to reduce the operation cost and thus they can provide high standard service, and the overall enterprise competence is improved.

Traffic information users also want accurate traffic information for sectional traffic conditions. Therefore, the reliability of the data regarding the link travel time as well as the development of a high traffic information acquisition technique is vital. To estimate the appropriate number of cars required to collect traffic information some of the main decision factors are types of Probe cars (car model), running characteristic of the Probe cars, amount and accuracy of section traffic information data acquisition, and characteristics of subject roads (link extension, link traffic condition, etc). Based on these factors the number of appropriate Probe cars that were needed in Incheon was estimated

The low carbon green growth in traffic can be defined as decreasing carbon exhaustion with maintaining the mobility and accessibility of traffic, and we will be able to expect the effect of two for one through promoting ITS ( Intelligent Transportation System). In this study, we intend firstly to consider the promoting processes of the domestic and foreign green traffic, secondly to think about the ITS promotion status in the green traffic, thirdly to consider the ITS in the green traffic and its relationship, fourthly to address the elementary technology of ITS for the green traffic, and finally to suggest development directions and promotion strategies to allow the policy of green traffic to take root as a traffic policy, which can last in South Korea in the future.

Reliability can be calculated as on-time performance, headway adherence and so on. Seoul has the bus system that frequency of bus is less than 10 minute. Bus systems do not have to have a time table at each bus stop as the distance of among bus stop is short, have frequent headway and passengers usually do not care what time what time bus will be arrived. In this study, we developed the reliability index of bus services based on passenger’s cognition at a bus stop. We apply this index to Seoul bus lines which drive both isolated Bus Median Lane and Side Bus Lane. We found some significant result from Seoul case study that BML is tend to improve and maintain the reliability as bus drive a haul. It is because bus equipped BMS system which operated GPS. Bus drivers continuously tried to adjust headway from previous passed bus and follow bus. We compare this finding with survey result conducted in Seoul MBL satisfaction survey in 2007.

BIS provides useful services not only passengers with information such as buses’ present location and estimated arrival time but also drivers with information such as the interval between the front and the rear buses. In Korea, lots of cities including Seoul, Incheon, Bucheon, and Jinju have adopted BIS and about 30 local governments are establishing BIS at present. Each local government operates BIS and manages bus companies which are only belong to its zone. It brings out unsatisfied and missing bus information because some bus lines linked with adjacent cities are not considered in the scope of analysis. Especially, not enough bus information are provided to the metropolitan buses which have long distance routes. Therefore, evaluation index for the effect of BIS in terms of metropolitan characteristics should be developed in order to improve public transportation services for all the citizens in capital area. In this study, we come up with the criteria for evaluating metropolitan bus information system by keeping pace with the current project of metropolitan BIS and through the review of analysis about existing BIS projects. The pre-evaluation and ex-post evaluation for bus related projects will be also examined.

On the other hand, multi-objective shortest path algorithms find the shortest paths in consideration with multi-objectives. Up to recently, the most of all researches about multi-objective shortest paths are proceeded only in single transportation mode networks. Although, there are some papers about multi-objective shortest paths with multi-modal transportation networks, they did not consider transfer problems in the optimal solution level. In particular, dynamic programming method was not dealt in multi-objective shortest path problems in multi-modal transportation networks. In this study, we propose a multi-objective shortest path algorithm including dynamic programming in order to find optimal solution in multi-modal transportation networks. That algorithm is based on two-objective node-based label correcting algorithm proposed by Skriver and Andersen in 2000 and transfer can be reflected without network expansion in this paper. In addition, we use non-dominated paths and tree sets as labels in order to improve effectiveness of searching non-dominated paths. We also classifies path finding attributes into transfer and link travel attribute in limited transit networks. Lastly, the calculation process of proposed algorithm is checked by computer programming in a small-scaled multi-modal transportation network.

Vehicle heats consist of the tire frictional heat, the vehicle radiant heat and the vehicle sensible heat due to vehicle induced wind velocity. In order to calculate the road surface temperature in a vehicle-passage area, the total vehicle heat flux in addition to metrological heat fluxes is included in a heat balance equation of the road surface layer. A thermography observation targeted a roadway near a traffic light in Fukui city that has two-three lanes each way. Stopping and starting of vehicles (vehicles stop and go) are always repeated due to the traffic light on only one side. It was shown that the difference in the road surface temperature on the lane between with and without the vehicles stop and go became clear as an atmospheric temperature fell. The former was about 3.5°C higher than the latter in the nighttime. This is caused by the tire frictional heat and the vehicle radiant heat. The validity of the VHRFF model was identified by comparing the calculated road surface temperature with the experimental one obtained from the thermography observation. The VHRFF model could reproduce almost the same temperature rise due to the vehicle heats as the outcome of the thermography observation.

In Korea, the free-flow speeds on expressway determined in the 1990s have been used in many transportation studies without careful improvements. However, it is possible that the free-flow speeds on expressway have been changed because the free-flow conditions on expressway are highly likely to be affected by numerous time-variant factors such as vehicle performances, roadway geometric conditions, and human factors. Therefore, it is imperative to reassess the free-flow speeds on expressway in Korea by reflecting the change in the factors over time. Recognizing this challenge, this study attempts to determine the free-flow speeds on expressway in Korea by utilizing the Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC) data collected from 95 sites on expressway in Korea. To capture the free-flow speeds, roadway segments were first classified by the number of lanes, and the peak period data were excluded in this study. By using the observed non-peak speed and traffic volume data, this study developed speed-flow curves and determined the free-flow speeds. It is highly expected free-flow speeds determined in this study are somewhat different from those in the past studies. Hence, it is necessary to improve the free-flow speeds on expressway in Korea by reflecting the results of this study.

There are many factors which affect the amount of vehicle-produced emissions, including the kind or size of vehicle, driving speed, the grade of the road, etc. Vehicles break down into passenger's car, bus, truck, and so forth and this is further complicated by breakdown into manual or automatic drive and the kinds of fuels used. The amount of emissions varies depending on which one of these factors applies. This paper presents an estimation of CO2 emissions as a result of TCS (Toll Collection System )deployment in Kyongbu expressway, a large-scale traffic network. Other important feature of this paper is disaggregate spatial estimation and analysis of the emissions of motorway instead of aggregate national-wide estimations in road (including various kind of road) The presented model calculates CO2 emissions for each vehicle type based on their speeds which is estimated using enter & exit time from TCS data set, for each section divided by IC(Interchange)

Recently, it has become a tendency that only the fiber-optic cable is for the communication lines but the copper cable is not used any more. In addition, the existing equipment that uses the copper cable is being replaced with the one using the fiber-optic cable. Main reason for such replacement is because the fiber-optic cable is resistant to erosion and population, free of interference from noises and capable of long-distance transmission at low transmission loss while the copper cable is vulnerable to surge and provides low communication quality. Along with such trend, new types of ITS have been introduced and their quantities have also increased, causing the fiber-optic cable to be saturated in which the number of fiber-optic cores is short. It is possible to solve this problem by increasing the fiber-optic cable but the expected effect in comparison to the investment is relatively low. Upon this, this study intends to improve the cable communication network using the communication equipment rather than using the line. This paper proposes a optimization plan to design a proper communication equipment configuration system depending on the data type of the information obtained from or to be provided to the system, and to configure a communication network by combining the cable and the wireless networks depending on the installation environment.

According to statistics of Korean National Police Agency, more than half of all traffic accidents were incurred by dangerous driving. Various efforts are being implemented to settle this problem which include recording of drivng data using blackbox, driver education or reinforcement of traffic laws and regulations. This study presents development of a safe driving management system and its application. Based on prior study, we classified dangerous driving maneuvers into 16 cases which consist of 10 single maneuvers and 6 combined, and we also suggested a dangerous driving detection algorithm and reasonable threshold for each maneuver. To validate effectiveness of dangerous driving detection algorithm and safe driving management system, we tried to apply system to commercial buses and passenger cars. After data collection for a few months in real traffic condition and analysis of data, we found distinctive features about dangerous driving maneuvers. They were frequent in some vehicle speed ranges, and infrequent in the other ranges. Furthermore, they were frequent in some times in a day or week, and infrequent in the other times. With this research, we tried to approach to the problem at the bottom. Along with further application in real-time monitoring and driver warning, or with driver education using driving simulator, we expect that traffic accidents will be reduced and social demand for construction of safe driving environment will be realized.

This paper is to introduce the gossip networking technology that has recently been suggested as an alternative means of sending traffic information and to attempt modeling and simulation of such technology applied in the field to find out relevant performance. Gossip networking refers to collecting traffic information on road conditions through communication between vehicles and grasping the situation based on information collected as such. Gossip networking is implemented with UIS module that collects and re-broadcasts traffic information sent from UVS module corresponding to vehicles, and UTC module that aggregates and manages the information from the UIS module. Each module is configured with a tiered structure leading to a system. In the study, each module of gossip networking technology is represented as a model using DEVS formalism, one of the methodologies used for modeling discrete events. Also, a scenario is simulated taking movements in actual environment into account to assess the performance of gossip networking and determine its applicability to the traffic environment system in the field.

Though the housing has been rarely treated very important as it is cheaper than the camera or the lens and does not require advanced technology, it still plays an important role in maintaining the performance of CCTV. For the housings installed outdoor, a wiper and a heat wire are attached to the monitor window, to prevent the video quality from being degraded by dew condensation, rain drops or dust, or compressed air is used to blow away dust or other impurities. Even though such electronic or mechanical technology is introduced, however, it is difficult to secure the monitor view under inadequate environment including snowstorm or unfavorable wind in which snow is stuck to the front glass of the housing. Sometimes, a fault in the system may interfere with the monitoring function. In other words, if the wiper stops working at the center of the front glass of the housing or the heater sensor does not work properly causing high temperature to badly affect the camera operation. This paper examines the cases of operation of the housing that determines the monitoring performance of CCTV, analyzes the features of the housings with auxiliary functions, and then proposes an improved housing design method. The housing fabricated by the improved design method and the one by the existing method are tested under a poor operation environment, to verify the validity of the proposed method.

The traffic control center operator and/or administrator can minimize the damages by promptly detecting such accidents and taking proper actions. As CCTV helps detect the accident promptly, ensure the safety of victims, and reduce the traffic stoppage time, the installation of CCTVs is rapidly increasing. Despite the increase in the number of CCTVs installed, the standard of CCTV installation has not yet been standardized, so that different manufacturers are using different pan/tilt specifications. This paper points out the problems caused by the use of different specifications and develops the integrated bracket that can accommodate different specifications at a low cost.

However, it is a common opinion that it is no more difficult to maximize the detection rate that is a key element of the bus location information accuracy because of the BMS OBU(On-Board Unit) based the Node data only and the fundamental error of GPS. This document provides an overview of the bus position tracking method using the Link data which it can improve the node detection rate dramatically. I will call this technique, “Link-based Map-matching method”. This technique was applied to bus information management system in Incheon metropolitan city, and showed a great performance. I will introduce the Link-based Map-matching method and Incheon case through this document.

The toll collection systems installed at the tollgates are divided into mechanical tolling system and electronic tolling system, each of which is configured with multiple pieces of equipment As the toll policy and the specifications of the vehicles passing through the tollgates changed, new systems have been installed, most of which are electronic equipment and protective structures for the equipment. This paper makes a study of an integrated structure that enables systematic installation, operation, and management of various types of equipment installed in the tollgates, and proposes its design. The proposed integrated structure is designed for the lanes for which Hipass system, the electronic tolling system, has already been deployed but the mechanical tolling system is left for future study. Since the Hipass system lanes are operated unattended, many structures are installed to prevent accidents. For this reason, the proposed integrated structure aims at improving the quality of system operation. In order to design the integrated structure, this paper analyzes the equipment deployed on the Hipass lanes, defines the items of which improvement can result in the improved operating quality of the equipment, and suggests the expected effects.

It means that people interact with computer at anytime wherever they are. It doesn’t need people’s consciousness of using computer themselves and all procedures are processed invisibly. In other words, Ubiquitous computing is human-centered computing environment. With this Ubiquitous computing technology and paradigm, transportation system can be developed as U-ITS(Ubiquitous Intelligent Transportation System). U-ITS is state of the art in the field of ITS as it can surpass the limit of existing ITS’ restricted technology and external factors. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of U-ITS and suggest ‘service-definition-template’ in order to create appropriate U-ITS services, and what is more important, U-ITS services should be evaluated properly how U-ITS services close to the ubiquity. Because of that, Ubiquity quotient(UQ) which is able to measure the degree of ubiquity about U-ITS services will be developed in this study for defining each services’ ubiquity requirements.

Daegu metropolitan city installed BMS to provide the citizen with the real-time bus position and arrival time for active public transport in August 2006. The bus position is collected by bus On Board Unit(OBU) and transmitted to bus management center through CDMA . And the time of arrival of next buses is served to the citizens through installed Bus Information Terminal (BIT) at bus stop. However, in metropolitan city such as Deagu, both the traffic congestion and the short interval between bus stops were able to make the error of inaccuracy of estimated arrival time. For example, it was occurred problem which display “Arrival Soon” information continuously after bus passes. This can cause several problems such as citizen’s complaint or inconvenient. To solve this problem, Zigbee has been applied to the secondary network between bus and bus stop. This resolved the time lag of “Arrival Soon” information and improved the accuracy of bus arrival information. As a result using the secondary network, the accuracy of information was analyzed as a very good by 99.67%.

Mobile communication is a basic means of collecting, processing, and providing necessary data. In Korea, almost all bus information systems use CDMA. However, due to such problems as resource sharing with general voice call networks and data communication networks and connection delay, the demand for alternative networks is getting greater. This paper proposes a method of applying Wibro to the bus information system. It also examines the shuttle bus information system deployment project on Goyang City, by applying Wibro communication network for locating buses in real time and for providing information to the drivers and to the bus information terminal.

Therefore, if export operation is delayed, it is negative to the goal of air cargo terminal, also to the competitive of the country and the brand image of airlines. Also, In 2009 the volume of export cargo has increased 6.4% compared to 2008. However, despite the increasing rate it is considered that we are still behind the competitors such as Japan, Hongkong and Singapore in terms of quality in cargo process technology. At this point RFID technology, which has capability of batch reading, real time identification, transparency to the object and fast processing, looks promising because it could bring competitiveness in cargo business area. However, due to high cost associated with its adoptions, careful investigation with precise analysis on the process and clear development on the specific application process are required. Recently there have been many studies on the RFID which analyze expected benefits in logistics area. However, it is not easy to apply such studies to the industry because, in many case, they omitted detail characteristics of technology or application method. In this study, we propose by reporting the location of cargo with SGLN code, the accuracy of the location information is improved from the current process in where the location identification is done manually. Also, by storing the location information into the system, working time can be reduced. A new RFID based process for storage and picking where the location identification is not easy task and compared the new process with conventional processing using simulation.

The system measures and transmits information in a vehicle. As it is necessary to know the location of information generated, the system represents locations with minimum data by segmenting roads and marking locations with road numbers and segment numbers. Each vehicle upon entering a segment aggregates nformation sent from the vehicle ahead and its own data to send the result to another vehicle following. When there is no car in the rear within the communication radius, the information is discontinued. Then information is aggregated periodically and sent to the vehicle, if any, in the rear. In segment-less sections of roads, information is transmitted based on traveling distances. The V2V (vehicle to vehicle) information transmission based on aforesaid three modes can even send information to vehicles at a long distance.

For the efficient use of a limited airspace, the discrete delay time options corresponding to the predetermined available trajectories or command modes are used as the control variables in sequencing and scheduling of flights. In the author’s previous works, a Genetic Algorithm, a Branch-and-Bound algorithm and a polynomial time algorithm, which is based on a minimum cost perfect matching problem, are developed for wide range of scenarios with various operational constraints, such as Maximum Position Shift or precedence constraints as well as discrete delay time options, and the performances of the proposed algorithms are compared through simulation study using illustrative flight data and real flight data of Gimpo airport in Korea. In this study, in order to extend the optimal scheduling problem at a single merging point, which was dealt with in the previous works, into the scheduling problem of multiple merging points in an entire terminal airspace, an interaction model of the formulated static optimization problems and the dynamic air traffic estimation model is proposed. Through simulation studies, it is verified that the proposed algorithms are capable of solving the optimal scheduling problem in a reasonably short time to cooperate with the dynamic traffic flow estimation model.

Since thousands of thousand sensors installed on the roads in a huge physical area send and receive through wireless coordinators and AP traffic data such as vehicle detection, classifications and speed measurements, a central traffic controller utilizes software agents to produce meaningful information for users, and to control distributed software agents. Particularly, it is of paramount importance to relate time-specific, location-specific and contents-specific information one way another. This paper reviews the recent updates of advanced methodologies for vehicle detection and classification sensors, USN network elements such as wireless coordinators (Zigbee) and AP (Wi-Fi or WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)), and RIA (Rich Internet Application)-based user interfaces. This paper also introduces an application of new standards KML (Keyhole Markup Language) in conjunction with software agents.

The multidirectional methods are having been studied to solve the congestion as the traffic volumes are growing faster than expected. Especially, HANAM Junction is congested by the traffic volumes of regular commuters because of lacks of capacity in the ramp and ramp junction. To solve this problem, alternative analysis was made for the capacity control and entrance control. The LCS that increases the capacity by using shoulder as driving lane was chosen as optimum alternative considering the condition of HANAM Junction. The simulation analysis was implemented to verify the effectiveness of application of LCS. The results showed that there was 20km/h increase of speed. The LOS and v/c improved from D to C and 0.89 to 0.56 respectively. It generated 15milion dollars as benefit cost and proved that effectiveness of benefit was outstanding.

Its system complexity is very high, so sensors that check the system status and communication systems are very important. And sensors installed this kind of hi-speed railway make data that is several Mbytes per minute, so measurements for trains usually use wire-based networks. Most of trains are divided into two part, up-side and down-side. And sensors for important data are attached in down-side, but monitoring servers and monitoring equipments are installed in up-side. Here is problem. When up-side and down-side is divided because of maintenance etc, wired network between up-side and down-side has to remove, and after repairing, connect again. If trains use 6LoWPAN to remove this kind of inconvenience, data wire can be eliminated. In addition, If trains use a high-speed wireless mobile communication network like HSDPA, it’s possible to send monitoring data, that is collected in inside of trains, at the server of outside remote place. Thus it can be a central control system.

The proposed algorithm uses route diversion probability from estimated traffic condition of alternative routes after active detour information is displayed. This algorithm determines when VMS active detour information is given and finished automatically by real-time traffic information from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). There exist two assumptions in this paper. First, the algorithm is developed especially for a simple hypothetical network with two alternative routes. Second, drivers choose their routes with route diversion probability based on probability utility theory after active detour information is shown. Moreover, explanatory variables that affect alternative routes choice are chosen such as distance between detour point and VMS, VMS contents, traffic situation of alternative route 1, 2, remaining distance to destination. As a result, it is expected that active detour strategies considering traffic condition can be carried out through the suggested algorithm in this paper. Moreover, the following second detour strategies can be fulfilled rapidly and reasonably by using finish decision module for detour information reflected previous VMS detour strategies. However, in this study, the validation for algorithm’s application possibility and credibility is not performed yet. Thus, algorithm’s each module and model should be verified through continuous researches in order to enhance the algorithm’s credibility in the future.
