In this paper, conceptualization and classification of ubiquitous based bicycle(U-bike) services are fulfilled and its adoptability was examined using AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. Group capabilities technique was invited to eliminate bias on appraisal. 12 U-bike services were conceptualized to U-bike information system, U- bike cycling services U-bike and transit system, U-public bike system and U-bike management and additional services system. According to analysis of criteria for services, economic factors such as profitability has revealed as more important ones than policy factors and technology factors. Also, U-service with highest of adoptability was 'bike and ride' service which can link bicycle to transit. 'Prevention system from abandonment and theft' and 'public bike system' similar with Velib system in Paris were also appraised to very important services in U-city. These services are expected to eliminate current limitation on using bicycles. Also, conceptualization and adoptability of U-bike services based on scientific methods can be a start point to promote bicycle use as an eco-friendly transportation mode in U-City.

Especially buses are the transportation that can be used the most frequently and easily by users. In fact, buses account for a higher percentage of the public transportation comparing with other ones not only in the major cities but in the minor cities. According to the survey of the bus environment for the disabled and the elderly in terms of considering convenience and accessibility in 2009, it says that the bus environment suitability for people is just up to 25.5%. Therefore we expect this should take priority over all other parts of transportation. Buses are considered as more economical and eco-friendly form of transportation and government establishes and carries many policies for improving the service of using the bus; the installation of the bus-shelter and the provision of BIS(Bus Information Systems). Universal Design, however, is not carried out yet because of the lack of the study on the safety zone of the bus stop. Therefore We suggest the set-up of the bus safety zone and present the Universal Design. We carried out a survey of bus users' satisfaction with bus environment targetting at unspecified individuals in HwaSung city.

The objectives of this queue control are to minimize the difference of queue length, and to minimize the summation of queue length at signalized intersection. For satisfying these goals, we devise the queue control model with feedback control and optimal control. Feedback control has a goodness to decrease an impact of transient behavior generated by insufficiency data information. It is possible to increase queue length while only considering the balance of queue length on both directions, so we apply optimal control to this queue model. We evaluate the effectiveness to analyze this model on various traffic volume scenarios by comparing to Webster’s green split method. Our results reveal that queue length decreased by keeping balance, the period of queue elimination and the range of queue spread decreased.

Specifically, we seek a way to estimate the probability of collision (POC) from the driver’s reaction time (RT) distribution. Since RT distributions change with driver’s arousal states, we propose measurement of eye-opening rate (EOR), together with RT, as an index of arousal level, estimation of RT distributions for low and high EOR, and computation of POC separately from these distributions. To examine the validity of our proposed method, we conducted an experiment using a driving simulator. We fitted ex-Gaussian functions to RT data to estimate their distributions. The results showed that the fitting was quite successful for all data, whereas there were marked individual differences in the way POC changed with EOR.

Up to now, vehicle information has been offered by vehicle manufacturers for proprietary services to a single service provider for delivery of these services in a specific market. This inflexibility made it difficult for ITS/Telematics service providers to provide advanced services based on vehicle information. A more open and standardized approach to provide vehicle information for ITS/Telematics Services has clear benefits for marketplace, but previous standardization efforts focused on replacing existing protocols or adding new protocols for newly emerging services, rather than integrating them to overcome the barriers for adoption. In this paper we want to introduce the standardization efforts in ISO TC204 WG17 to specify a common software interface to a vehicle gateway integrated within the CALM architecture and easily exchange vehicle information data among nomadic and/or mobile device, vehicle gateway and ECUs. The VMG provides vehicle manufacturer/VMG supplier controlled access to vehicle data and functions. The ND software applications have a similar functionality compared to an Internet browser. The VMG concept is designed to fit two major use cases. One is the vehicle manufacturer engineered product designed into the vehicle at the time of the development of the vehicle. The second is the aftersales product designed by independent aftermarket tool suppliers. This product is an add-on for most of all vehicles which do not have built-in VMG functionality.

Currently, a large number of accidental contacts happen in parking lots behind the statistics. To avoid such an accident, it is necessary to detect objects and pedestrians which may cause accidents. Our approach is to estimate depth to detect objects with rear view camera. The problem with rear view camera is low resolution for wide-angle camera. Moreover, the vehicle speed signal has large quantization errors due to slow movement while parking. These cause low accuracy in estimating depth of objects. In order to obtain high accuracy, we utilize a time-series filtering method, the unscented kalman filter. Unlike normal kalman filter, it is more suitable for non-linear time-series data caused by turning movements while parking. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieved high performance for an on-vehicle rear camera system in parking lot environment.

By analyzing it, traffic control department can obtain travel features and make public transport plan. Taxi company can use it for taxi dispatching. Also, for drivers without real-time traffic data, the information is valuable as hot O-D area might be congested place to avoid. In this paper, we introduce a hot O-D area estimation method by using taxi GPS data. To detect hot O-D area efficiently, there are two key steps in our method which are effective O-D extraction and hot O-D clustering. This paper discusses the main idea of the proposed method and presents the preliminary result based on taxi GPS data in Beijing.

In order to forecast to what extent such assistances for safe drive are effective in various traffic environments, it is necessary to simulate the provision of information by communication, driver's response and fluctuation of traffic flow at the same time. The development of simulators that can perform these operation in an integrated manner is expected. This report introduces our attempt to build an integrated simulator that operate on computers integrating simulators dedicated to factors such as traffic flow, communication and driver's behaviour.

It is showed that this unmanned camera is effective to prevent accidents by leading drivers to keep the law at accident potential spot. However, there has been a concern that it can reduce its effectiveness due to accident migration as a result of changing driver’s driving manner and habits. Therefore this paper will analyze an accident migration and a range of effect depending on unattended traffic enforcement equipment operation. As a result, this paper will provide a reasonable index to set a range of accident migration effect as well as expanding of its eligibility to minimize accident migration which can be raised as a negative effect of unattended traffic enforcement equipment operation.

One important aspect of dilemma-free control is the understanding of drivers’ behavior involving the reaction time to take braking actions and the deceleration rate of a vehicle. However, there is a lack of empirical research on this critical issue. This paper describes a study of the effects of pedestrian traffic lights on the driver behaviors in the dilemma zone using a driving simulator. It is found that the driver’s decision in the dilemma zone is heavily influenced by the pedestrian traffic lights and vehicle’s distance to the stop line. Results of this study also show that there is no clear difference in vehicle approach speeds between those that stop for the signal and those that do not stop. The insight gained from this study can be applied to improve the existing dilemma-free control method.

We equipped nearly one hundred taxies traveling around the center of Yokohama City with onboard units. The onboard units communicate via infrared beacons on the roadside to allow the collection of the probe data transmitted from the equipped vehicles. The results suggest that the probe data of only one hundred taxies can be successfully applied to traffic management if probe data are accumulated for sufficiently long periods of time and are used in combination with vehicle detector data.

Evaluation and categorizing process of Transfer Center adopted the concept of integral intermodal time and intermodal entropy. In this paper, three types of classifications are used. In addition, evaluation of each type of Transfer Centers in Seoul is done by reviewing the system of traffic connectivity between modes and field survey. After the result of reviews on selected Transfer Center analysis, the last selected site for data analysis is totally 19 places; seven in a Public Transportation linked type, seven in a Parking lot type and five in a Terminal type Transfer Center. Through this analysis, we proposed a way to improve the Transfer Centers in Seoul. However, nationwide researches are needed; due to the other characteristic of Transfer Centers can be found.

The advisory safety speed model is consisted within-vehicle driver information relating to adverse weather and road-surface data which are real-time sensing through radar detector while traveling on SMART Highway. Also, it is related to real-time vehicle data, such as vehicle speed, RPM(round per minute), and fuel consumption rate etc., collected from OBDII - ECU(Engine Control Unit) equipment. The advisory safety speed model is consisted of two parts: One is the macro car-following model considering traffic parameter on highway and the other is the safe-stop-distance model considering road-surface data. To evaluate the new algorithm, we are using VISSIM for simulation the Highway communication network. This research is considered that a safer application during driving the highway. The purpose of the research is to prove the new safety related services which are applicable in SMART Highway.

ASSESS can reproduce the 3D environment of a real-world intersection on a computer and to make vehicles (agents) that can run autonomously appear in this virtual intersection based on measurement data from traffic flow at a real-world intersection. ASSESS can output the number of traffic accidents and near-miss incidents by simulating this situation over a long period (e.g. several months). ASSESS evaluates the effects of active safety systems based on the change in the number of accidents and near-miss incidents according to the adoption rate of the active safety system. This simulator is the multi-agent system that consists of three programs; an environment model, driver model and vehicle model plus a control program that manages these models. The environment model is a program to generate the appearance schedule of agents in the virtual intersection based on the traffic flow data of real-world. The driver model is a program that simulates the driver's driving behavior with human error. The vehicle model is a program that calculates the agent's position based on this driving operation output by the driver model. In this paper, it is analyzed the vehicle's behavior in this virtual intersection reproduced with ASSESS by comparing with the vehicle's behavior that is observed in the real-world intersection. As a result, it was confirmed that ASSESS reproduces almost equal with the traffic flow measured in the real-world intersection by the comparison of the traveling time through the intersection.

The rear view camera can be utilized as a collision monitoring sensor from behind in driving scene. We have been developing the technology to prevent rear-end collision from backward by detecting an approaching vehicle using the image of a rear view camera. In the conventional methods, optical flow is often estimated for detecting an approaching vehicle. However, it is difficult to detect a distant vehicle because its motion is insufficient in the image. In this paper, we propose the improvement method of the distant approaching vehicle detection with accuracy from the top-view image, which is projected to the road plane using perspective transformation. The object in the top-view image moves at the proportional displacement to its speed. Furthermore, the width of the object is constant regardless of the distance from the host vehicle. Therefore, our method can provide easy detection and the accurate position of the distant vehicle. We show the details of the proposed method and availability by experiment using the model image.

This was achieved by introducing the movement control, which is not generally applied within Japan, for control of traffic signals and also revising the vehicle line structure and vehicle flow lines (signal phases). The movement control refers to a signal control method that changes the sequence of signal phases according to the traffic volume in each direction at an intersection. In Japan, this method is applied experimentally at two intersections only. For the first time in Shizuoka Prefecture, the Shizuoka Prefectural Police implemented the safety and smooth measures of the traffic flow by introducing the practical movement control at the "Susono IC intersection" located at the Susono IC gateway of the Tomei Expressway and also revising the lane structure and vehicle flow lines (signal phases). Operations of these measures were completed on April 1, 2009.

A few developed countries have been applied these toll collection methods on the freeway and stored quite amount of data needed for analyzing their impacts on highway system. However, many of developing countries have not yet been experienced so, they need a macroscopic model for decision in choosing toll collection strategy best for their transportation environment before implementing it. The purpose of this study is to propose macroscopic model to analyze the prospective effects of value pricing strategies, and to compare their results. Three charging methods, ERP, HOT lane, FAIR lane, are simulated by using the proposed model. The results show that there was a sizeable increase in freeway capacity and in average travel speed on the tolled express lanes. It is also found that ERP system is superior in overall revenue from charging toll compared to other methods.

The essential infrastructure for the system has been spread throughout the country. We can see there are several types of terminals or gates in all kinds of public transportation. As various types of the terminal, each terminal has their own operable transportation card differently. A key problem is that interoperability is not supported, not only in transportation methods (e.g. bus, train, etc.), but in regional areas. We are required to develop a novel interoperable transportation smart card system, called the OCAP card (One Card All Pass in Korea) system based on the Korea Industry Standard. This paper proposes the purchase terminal, one of the components in the OCAP card system. We design and develop the purchase terminal for the OCAP card system has to be able to recognize the existing regular card and the OCAP card with the standard PSAM inside. Through running a test-bed, we expect our proposed terminal could be used with a reasonable degree of certainty with reliability

The proposed control architecture is composed of two layers. The upper layer is state controller which circumstantially switching vehicle’s states such as stand-alone vehicle, platoon leader and platoon follower. The lower layer is feed-back controller for controlling the traction forces, braking forces and steering angle of a vehicle for keeping a velocity, an inter-vehicle distance and tracking a road center or a trajectory of the preceding vehicle. The lower layer has several kinds of feedback control algorithms. The control algorithms working under each vehicle’s state are settled in advance, and automatically switched according to the vehicle’s state. Thus the vehicle’s behavior regarding platooning can be easily controlled by changing vehicle’s states without considering vehicle motion control. The proposed control is validated by experiments using small electric vehicles.

The proposed scheme pursues to maintaining traffic flow stability to prevent from or at least delay the flow breakdown and as a result, to maintaining the productivity. In developing the scheme, there are mainly two technical issues to be addressed: One is how to monitor traffic flow stability. The other is what should be done to maintain the traffic flow stability. Some simulation experiments are performed to address these issues and a new freeway flow management scheme is provided based on the simulation results. The control strategies according to the various control objectives for each traffic flow states are proposed as follows: Advise the drivers to maintain the optimal speed for normal flow state, maintain the traffic flow stability by platoon control for critical state, and surpress the shock wave propagation for congested state.

A non-stop driving assist service is a service that affects instantaneous speed rather than average speed. Therefore, to evaluate this service, we applied a high-spatiotemporal resolution traffic simulator that reproduces instantaneous speed as precisely as a driving simulator and a CO2 emissions model that takes instantaneous speed into account. We investigated how reductions in CO2 emissions are related to traffic volume and adoption rate. As a result, we found that the service was rather effective when the traffic volume was low, and that even if the service’s adoption rate was low, a certain reduction in CO2 emissions could be expected.

Toll deduction takes place when the vehicle passes through a toll station without stopping. Current BOT contract requires 100% enforcement rate for all failed-deductions. With the help of the OBU registry information, 65% of the failed-deduction tolls require no further manual intervention. The remaining 35%, similar to video tolls, require manual verification to ensure 100% billing accuracy. With LPR system’s 95% accuracy rate, the fore mentioned operation model consumes significant manpower resources. This study is to improve the manpower efficiency with the adoption of a parallel LPR system. Using 2 different LPR systems and real data as input, an enhanced operating process is proposed to automatically resolve 78.7% of the manual verification cases so that significant operating manpower can be saved.
