We proposed a two-step learning algorithm - Genetic Gradient Algorithm (GGA) for RBF neural network. A genetic algorithm (GA) initially determines the parameters of the RBF network including not only the number and the locations of the selected centers but also the widths of Gaussian kernel functions in the hidden layer. Then a gradient descent algorithm is adopted to further adjust these parameters of the RBF network. Furthermore, we established an RBF network predicting model for traffic information prediction. The experimental results conducted on the real-time traffic speed information prediction in the city of Ningbo showed the good effects of our proposed methods.

By this system, the infrared beacon which has enough actual results provides vehicles with information such as signaling information or road alignment information. In this system, self-vehicle position which is distanced from an intersection (stop line) is important information. We adopted a method to sense the precise location of vehicles from communication establishment timing of an infrared beacon and an in-vehicle unit and planned the demonstration test which collected foundation data of the detection accuracy.

Through the FY 2005 study on IVC using 5.8GHz band, we found relay function is effective for non-line-of-sight environment. Also we found that simple relay may cause congestion of communications when the number of communicating vehicles increases. To resolve this issue, a new system of relay control protocol suitable for safe driving support applications is proposed. In FY 2006, we verified the proposed relay control protocol through field experiments and simulations. This paper introduces the accomplishment of these experiments and simulations.

Around the world, in different ways, different models are being proposed, which seek to balance these costs of infrastructure provision - so critical to economic transformation goals - with the benefits of making those costs more 'real' to users. This paper will explore: Should we be spending Government funding to curb the problems stemming from our current transportation system? Do we need to create controls and incentives to limit the ever-increasing rise in automobile use? Should the public be paying for the roads as they do for every other utility? What are the options? How might international experience be applied in NZ?

Instead of the above method, Toyota Motor Corporation has implemented a method of successively updating the map by distributing only the changed data, via mobile phones or the Internet, starting in the spring of 2007. Consequently, the latest map information can be greatly enhanced, and when new expressways and toll roads are added, it can be distributed about one week after opening for traffic.

Aiming to assist wheelchair trips, a navigation system which guides wheelchairs to a route of least physiological load was studied. To realize the system, estimation models of wheelchair traveling load (link cost) were developed adopting the physiological fatigue as a common scale for plural wheelchair trip obstacles. Collecting brachii electromyograms experimentally, the fatigue scale (iEMG) was made out by integrating and normalizing the data. Using the scale iEMG, link cost estimation models were created. Applying the estimation models for wheelchair trips on actual streets, the estimation accuracy of the models was confirmed being comparatively well and enough to utilize them for a wheelchair navigation system.

Recently finding and comparing favorite POIs by POI evaluation sites is common. However such evaluation owes mainly to human data entry thus it isn’t really real-time. The TRIPOLI system enables real-time POI evaluation us-ing floating car data. We assumed arrivals of floating car to POI presents the popularity of the POI. To evaluate our assumption, we performed comparison between floating car arrivals and web traffic. The results indicate the feasibility of the automated real-time POI evaluation sys-tem.

One reason for this development is their improved performance and lower prices as a result of advances in information technology (IT). Another reason is the standardization of an in-vehicle VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) unit for displaying real-time traffic information on the car navigation monitor. In addition, telematics services that contribute to a comfortable driving environment were launched in 1995. Facilitating exchanges of information between vehicles and the outside world, these services are accessed by connecting a mobile phone or other portable device to the car navigation system. This paper describes the latest trends in car navigation and telematics services in Japan.

Multi-path signal caused by sound barrier wall is observed with increasing the coverage. This degrades the target recognition performance due to the increase in number of receiving signals. We introduce a receiving antenna that has eight array elements into the radar to increase maximum number of the detectable signals. After all we confirm early acquisition of new targets at cut-in situation.

It utlises the speed detectors and controls to let vehicles avoid the dilemma zone and the option-zone. The suitable areas for the dilemma-zone avoidance control can be a downstream place of an overpass, a decline or a section that traffic signals are installed in the long interval. It turned out that many rear-end or head-on collisions occur in those places from the real traffic situation within the jurisdiction. But it is difficult to install the effective speed detectors for the dilemma-zone avoidance control in the overpass and it means that installing that control is impossible. We installed the dilemma-zone avoidance control with the new vehicle detectors in the intersection with the traffic signal that is located at the downstream place of the overpass, which was impossible for us to install it. Specifically, drivers can receive appropriate information in a timely fashion while remaining in a vehicle. Also, driving data can be transmitted from the digital tachograph to an office through DSRC. This allows the automation of the production of a daily journal that illustrates the driving data in detail. Consequently, the combined use of digital tachographs and DSRC will reduce the workload of drivers, make vehicle allocation more efficient, and improve fuel efficiency.

This paper proposes an algorithm method that detects moving objects while the car is in motion. The proposed method is based on the image converted into overhead view and an image difference method using the movement amount obtained by the onboard sensor. Furthermore, by analyzing the shape of the area detected through the image difference method, the shadow area changed due to the host vehicle movement is removed. Experiments show that the proposed method is effective under the real-world conditions.

However, It is mainly just used as a background map. The data of the road network made out with reference to them is used for en- route guidance by car navigation. The result of having made out a marking from aerial photograph at first hand, it is hardly used as a middle result for generating a network to the end. If a network map becomes the basis of not only the object for guidance but the data for driving assist and vehicle control, at the usage, there must be no necessity as a background map. It is thought in the process which creates this road network that quite automatic processing will be possible. The input by people in the process of making to figure part decreases, and it leads to shortening the entire working hours.

High frequency information, from which feature parameters are built, is extracted from the image by wavelet transform. Through analyzing the correlation coefficient between feature parameter and visibility grade, we find the feature parameter can be taken as the input value for pattern recognition by neural network to evaluate fabric wrinkle grade. Output of the neural network is the five grades of atmosphere visibility in the place where the camera is fit. Optical visibility detection instrument is used as a comparison with the algorithm in the testing experiments, and the results show that this visibility algorithm is effective and robust.

The key mathematical model of vehicle reversing trajectory was systematically established based on the theory derivation and experimental verification. This trajectory model is universal and applicable to almost types of vehicles just by replacing basic vehicle dimensions. The predicted trajectory can be instantaneously calculated according to the angle of steering wheel and superimposed onto the image shown on the monitor to let the driver know beforehand where the vehicle will go. Besides estimated reversing route, the extension lines of vehicle width as well as distance reference lines were designed to provide the driver more information about vehicle attitude and interval between obstacles.

A novel method to extract jam events by analyzing the road background feature is developed in this research. The proposed algorithm includes two stages: background extraction and jam detection. The background image was extracted by performing the difference on three consecutive frames. According to the extracted background, we analyze the mean and variance of the input image to detect traffic jam. The proposed method has been tested on a number of traffic-image sequences and the experimental results show that the algorithm is robust and real-time.
