This procedure includes two Artificial Neural Network-based models. Model A is used to forecast the duration time at the instant of accident notification while Model B provides sequential updates of duration time after the moment of accident notification. These two models together provide a sequential forecast of accident duration from the accident notification to the accident site clearance. With these two models, the estimated duration time can be provided by plugging in relevant traffic data as soon as an accident is notified. To select data feature, Genetic Algorithm can decreases the number of model inputs and preserves the relevant traffic characteristics with fewer inputs. This study shows proposed models are feasible ones in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) context.

The degree of saturation should show a stable pattern under the saturated and oversaturated traffic conditions, but it frequently shows an unstable distribution. To overcome this limitation, this study investigates two alternatives on the premise that the saturated non-occupancy measured in the cycle applied directly without smoothing. Test results indicate that the accuracy of the degree of saturation estimates can be improved by considering abnormal traffic data during the estimation process.

However, this critical speed value needs to be adjusted differently depending on the averagely driving speed in the past, a road condition, the consciousness in a user of the road, and the characteristic by section in each road. Accordingly, this study was calculated the critical speed which divides the traffic conditions depending on the characteristic by main congestion section in FTMS for Seoul Urban freeway, through the Break-point Analysis in the degree of scattering for the basic relationship of Volume-Speed. And, it elicited the conclusion that there is great difference between the speed value in the standard of judging congestion depending on the characteristic by each section, and the critical speed that was basically established.

With over 3,000 traffic signal sites in Victoria, efficiency improvements, such as the use of ELV, have the potential to contribute significant community benefits. Traffic signal installations have traditionally operated using 240 volt AC. However, the introduction of LED traffic signal lanterns has made it possible to use ELV. The ELV traffic signals operate on 48 volt AC power. To date, the high power consumption of incandescent and quartz halogen traffic signal lamps has prohibited the use of lower voltages. The major benefit of extra low voltage traffic signals is that it uses a much safer voltage that will substantially reduce any potential electrical hazards for both working technicians and the public. This paper describes both the on site installation process and the 18 months of development and testing b

At present, an ITS called ETC (automatic toll payment system) is being adopted at those tollgates in Japan, and this is helping to alleviate traffic jams. In this research, the flow of traffic at a tollgate using the ETC adopted for large urban expressways was reproduced using a traffic flow simulation, and this was used to vary factors such as position, quantity and usage rate, and verify what kind of differences there are regarding the traffic situation, and whether traffic jams are alleviated. As actual data, the study looked at tollgates on the Higashi-Osaka Route of the Hanshin Expressway in the Osaka region, analyzed the actual situation, and considered ideas for improvement.

Drive recorder which can record view image and motion data of vehicle is considered as useful tool for investigating driver behavior in dangerous situation. In this paper, using the drive recorder, many data including sudden braking incident during yellow signal of intersections have been collected. Throughout the experiment from summer to winter, sudden braking incident at stop-line of intersection are compared to the dilemma zone. By the influence of snowy road surface, the dilemma zone is theoretically enlarged, and it induces more dangerous situations. However, the influence has not yet been systematically clarified by experiment. In this research, the experimental results show that the area of incident distribution coincides with dilemma zone, and it becomes larger in low friction road condition.

As navigation services (on-trip and pre-trip) are nowadays widely accepted by private consumers and fleet operators, there is the chance to combine public objectives of traffic guidance with those of private event management, e.g. park guidance strategies. To fulfill such objective, it is recommended to complete classical traffic control with mobile traffic detection known as Floating Car Data. For the FIFA world cup 2006 the local authorities in Hanover (Germany) decided to contract a consortium to fulfill this task and to increase the coverage of classical traffic detection by GPS/GSM equipped Floating Cars in order to guarantee maximum transport quality for VIP’s and visitors. In this paper results of such project and other traffic management actions taken in Hanover will be presented, i.e. the positive effect of the integrated approach using classical and mobile t

Buses face the challenge of competing with other transport modes such as car, taxi, etc in a multimode traffic system. The existing bus schedules consist of departure and arrival time at main stations on the urban road network. However, they did not consider the delay as buses stop at main stations. A detailed timetable, on the other hand, consists of the departure and arrival times of its line route, always could not overcome the delay resulted from other traffic modes. In this paper, a new integer programming(IP) formulation for bus scheduling problem based on a space-time network is developed; at the same time, a new method to coordinate bus scheduling operation with an attempt to reduce travel times of public transit vehicles is proposed. Our approach includes some realistic constraints that have not been previously considered as well as all the assumptions and practical issues consider

However, it’s impossible to calculate real traffic information for all the roads within a large geographic area using float car data alone, because of the limitation of the quantity of float car and the interval of GPS. The insufficient of information will be a barrier of the large-scale application of float car system, which has not been solved perfectly until now. In this paper, two real-time information repair algorithms are proposed. By using the information from other roads or from other periods of time, these algorithms can estimate the information of the roads which have not been covered so as to effectively enhance the application value of float car system.
