Neural network is employed as the simulation model to forecast the demand at each station at certain time period in the system. This study distinguished from the previous study because it introduces intelligent filtering techniques as a tool to remove the noise of the data before it is fed into the simulation model. Two filtering techniques have been tested, namely outlier analysis and cluster analysis. Results show that this extra procedure helps to enhance the forecasting model as well as improve the forecasting accuracy.

In this paper, a simulation study was conducted to compare queue control performance between a coordinated algorithm and a standalone algorithm, under different ramp demand and other key parameters. The results show that the application of coordinated algorithm can improve queue control performance in terms of efficient use of ramp storage capacity, the number of override, and smoothness of exit rates.

In fact, fusion of these two methods may generate some distinct benefits. This paper proposes two schemes of fusing stereo and motion for improving object detection and tracking. The basic idea is to make use of information extracted from two pairs of image sequences captured from a stereovision rig, i.e. disparity from left and right image pair and motion fields from consecutive images. The first scheme is to impose the motion vectors as extra constraints for stereo matching. The second scheme is using a Kalman filter as a mixer to combine the distance measurement and the motion vector measurement for object tracking. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for improving the quality of stereo matching and 3-dimensional object tracking.

The actual data of Beijing Third Ring Road are presented to describe the procedure of a traffic jam formation, and the concepts proposed in this paper are used to describe and explain such procedure. From the empirical data of traffic flow, we find out that for a multi-lane road, before the traffic jam formation, the HMI of the traffic flow will change abruptly and the state transition: homogeneous state (H-S) to non-homogeneous state (N-S) is likely to be occurred. Therefore, the HMI can be taken into account as a pre-warning index of the traffic jam formation.

The elevated expressways in downtown Shanghai are highly clogged during peak hours as well as off-peak hours. To improve traffic situation of elevated expressway without adding more infrastructure and creating negative impacts on environment, an ATMS for elevated expressway has been established. Considering the complexity of elevated expressway network, regional-oriented and dynamic traffic management strategy was proposed for ATMS. This paper presents system framework and main functions of ATMS. The field equipment part of this ATMS consists of real-time traffic data collection subsystem, traffic guidance and control subsystem, and real-time surveillance subsystem. This paper gives the detailed introduction of the features of these subsystems. In addition, it gives the evaluation results for ATMS demonstration project and gives recommendations for further research.

But the current protocols in Grid and SOA can not effectively support discovery, negotiation, and invocation of ITS services at a semantic level. In this paper, we present an ontology-based service oriented information integration architecture that consists of two new aspects. The first aspect is to present our traffic domain ontology model and traffic application ontology model. The second aspect is to utilize our traffic ontology model to integrate and share distribute and heterogeneous traffic information. This architecture has been partly implemented in DartGrid – our fundamental platforms for the sharing of the knowledge and services in Intelligent Transportation Systems and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Consideration was given to the fact that ANPR cameras provide direct journey time with good accuracy. In incident-free traffic condition, a simply linear model has been developed for one-step-ahead prediction (5 minutes ahead), and the Kalman filter algorithm has been used for multi-step-ahead prediction. The Kalman filter model developed in this research has been shown to be effective in predicting journey time and acceptable errors have been obtained using this model. The average relative prediction error was found to increase with the length of the prediction interval. With a 20-minute interval, the prediction error remains under 10%. However, significant increases in the prediction error were observed at 30-minute prediction period.

In such a system, inter-vehicle communication (IVC) will be crucial for relaying location- and time-critical traffic information. In this paper, we are interested in the problem how road-side stations can improve connectivity of IVC in a traffic stream. We first propose an analytical model for the connectivity problem and then study some examples of different densities and positions of road-side stations. This study can help develop effective strategies for installing road-side stations under different traffic conditions.

In this paper, we present a framework for developing and evaluating evacuation strategies based on a kinematic wave model of network vehicular traffic. We then discuss a measure of the effectiveness of evacuation plans and apply the model to study a simple road network. This model is suitable for emergency evacuations, since road networks can be easily set up and calibrated, computational cost is independent of the number of vehicles, and traffic congestions caused by capacities of road links and network structure can be effectively simulated.

Templates of road sign images are represented as a hierarchical structure of some component blocks. In the paper approaches for block selection and for hierarchical structure construction are our contributions. Existing block based methods require that template images having sufficient texture, but which is not the situation for road signs. In our method, blocks used as basic matching units (BMU) are selected based on calculations of their penetration numbers. And the hierarchical structure is formed by comparing the cover areas of different subsets of all BMUs. Experiments on actual video clips taken by in-vehicle cameras proved the robustness and efficiency performance of our method.

In current studies, the method based on vision has been a leading technique. In JLUVA-DFWS(Jilin University Vision Alarm-Driver Fatigue Warning System) system realized before, there are two shortcomings: one is the lower detecting speed with skin color model and the other is the face features’ detecting robustness with the face area rectangle as ROI (Region of Interest) of detected features. This paper presents a method to resolve the problem. The method uses AdaBoost detector combined with skin color model to detect the face region efficiently, adopts Random Hough Transform to fit an ellipse template based on the face edge point detection and detects the features in ellipse template robustly. Test results show that the method can locate the face region efficiently and detect the features effectively.

In addition, the mean link travel time of taxi and transit vehicles is longer than common light personal vehicles in most situations. When taxi is used as traffic probe, the median instead of the mean link travel time may be used to improve the estimation results. As for the military and police vehicles, the mean link travel time may be longer or shorter than common light personal vehicles depending on the situations.

Such queues block upstream intersections and make optimal utilization of lanes impossible. This paper presents a model that gives an accurate and reliable estimate of the probability distribution of the back of the queue. The results show that the queues that occur in 20% of the cycles can be twice of more longer than is calculated by conventional methods.

The safety impact of concomitant changes in the drivers’ behaviour and changes in the traffic demand is assessed by matching accidents between equipped and not equipped road sections for the same period. Microscopic traffic indicators (based on individual speeds and headway) and aggregated traffic indicators (based on average speed and density by lane) are used to form a safety model, calibrated with the accidents of French motorways.

Duration and amplitude of the error were varied, as well as the type of error (with/without torque feedback) and the driver’s expectancy of error occurrence. Results are analysed in terms of driver input (steering wheel angle), overall driver-vehicle output (lateral path deviation), and subjective ratings. Drivers seem to base their judgement of error severity on the steering input rather than on the resulting path deviation. Errors with a counterintuitive torque feedback are rated as worse than errors without torque feedback, even though the overall outcome is better.

The architecture and communication system for the DMM-Tracs, including system components, communication technologies and operation mechanism, are introduced. With this system, the merge metering control will be activated depending on the volume and/or speed detected at an upstream location of the work zone. If the thresholds of control parameters are met, a merge metering signal installed at the taper area will be activated and approaching vehicles will be instructed in the advance areas of the work zone. To reduce forced merges and potentials of merge conflicts, the control scheme will adjusted on the real-time basis depending on the detected traffic conditions. The delay penalty is distributed equally in all lanes. This potentially increases the efficiency with which the

The commonly used strategy is normalized cross correlation coupled with nearest neighbor classifier. However, it is sensitive to noise and suffers from high computation load. To overcome the mentioned drawbacks, we present newly proposed Uncorrelated Fisher Discriminant analysis (UFDA) [15] and Image matrix based Discriminant analysis (IFDA) [16] to classify traffic signs images, which can extract the important discriminate features between different classes. We conclude with extensive empirical evaluations, showing its advantage in high classification ratio and also short computation time.

Especially, the traffic flow on the arterials with many access points experience delay from the interrupting traffic flow. Most of the ATMS strategies to deal this problem are being applied independently. Integration of adaptive signal control with access meters through ATMS strategies can relieve the congestion. This paper develops an Integrated Arterial Signal and Access Control (IASAC) strategy. During the process a heuristic algorithm has been proposed to decrease the computational time. The heuristic algorithm integrates SCOOT algorithm, and BOTTLENECK access metering algorithm for selected time horizon. Development of control objective function for solution of algorithm is explained in detail. Finally, a simulation-based test bed has been designed for evaluating the IASAC Algorithm. Using Paramics software, a case study of two scenarios with and without IA

On the other hand, transportation network reliability evaluation is developing in the world as a new technology which is used to evaluate the transportation network, especially stability. As a development city, TAXI is one major and universal mode of travel in Beijing. The smart card which is installed in taxi can record the travel time and distance per trip by taxi. With the smart card data, the rate time per trio can be calculated. And the regulation of travel rate time by taxi can be fond from the cumulative taxi datum. In this paper, three new reliability indices and methodologies about travel rate time are provided; and Beijing transportation network is analyzed with using these indices and the taxi trip datum.

Unlike traditional car-following models that deliberately prohibit vehicle collisions, the proposed model considers the weakness and risks associated with everyday driving and strives to capture both safe as well as unsafe driving behaviors. Vehicle trajectories extracted from real-life crashes were employed to test the model’s capability of replicating freeway rear-end collisions. Additionally, RTKGPS crash-free trajectory data were used to validate the model against normal driving behavior. Testing results indicate that the proposed model can emulate both normal as well as unsafe driving behaviors that could lead to vehicle collisions. Finally, feasibility of integrating the proposed model with existing micro-simulators is discussed.

Important issue is to determine the proper equilibrium between the resources devoted to the two main system elements. The necessity of continuous improvement of informatics and logistic flows is not questionable since the efficiency of logistics control systems can be increased by reducing the time gap between the time of gaining the data and use of information for planning purpose. In different logistics subsystems the role and importance of time gaps differ. Having generally overviewed the subsystems the papers introduce the efficiency of informatics based on Cobb-Douglas production function in order to spot the elements of logistics where the reduction of time gap is of economic interest, that is under what conditions can the IT developments and investment be efficient.
