While statistical methods are useful for extracting information, it does not entirely leverage the intuition human has for visually inspecting patterns. This paper proposes a visualization to aid the understanding of traffic patterns in vehicle trajectory data. The proposed 4D visualization draws a colored line for each vehicle's trajectory in a three dimensional graph. The four dimensions of data are time (x-axis), distance travelled along the road (y-axis), lane identification (z-axis) and vehicle's speed (color of the line). With this visualization, human can inspect patterns, such as speed oscillations, traffic transitions and the speed patterns in different lanes. The benefits of this approach is that both experts and novices can apply their ability to visually recognize patterns in understanding traffic data.

However, evaluations about the attribute of the driver (differ according to gender, age, driving frequency) were not enough. In this research, we have carried out to confirm the effect of the classification of gender, age, the driving frequency and the driving characteristics of subjects. We were able to confirm the thing that is different in an effect stimulation of light by not only different gender, age and the driving frequency but also the driving characteristics.

To eliminate this deficiency we have expanded the reach of the service from one intersection to multiple intersections and thereby improved the timing of advice provision. Further, we examined the driver's acceptance of the service based on the simulation results and conducted field studies. Resulting from the simulation analysis and the subsequent system improvement we have been able to improve the CO2 emission reduction by the GWA. Nevertheless, the acceptance evaluation showed that it is not enough to develop the system, but that it is also necessary to think about how to best communicate the information to the driver.

Also, the effort to reduce a factor of traffic congestion by providing information for smooth inducement of traffic is progressing. For smooth flow of traffic, it has to be possible not to subjective viewpoint of vehicles, but objective location, velocity and division of a carriageway. Positioning technology is solving by GPS and DGPS but shady and local multipath place needs short-range positioning. In this paper, we confirmed state-specific flexibility of positioning data by blending the positioning algorithm of DGPS sensor in open field and the algorithm of beacon system in shady place. We can determine the carriageway width considering lane and vehicle width by blending algorithm as the average error is 25cm in DGPS and 80cm in RF-beacon. We proved the verification and effectiveness by dynamic simulation and real motorway driving data.

DGPS improves the accuracy of position, velocity by providing measurements or correction data from one reference stations using Networked Transport. By DGPS performance, typically an experience position error of GPS is reduced from 2m to 0.5m. The proposed system was configured as a server, GPS and Embedded PC for monitoring supported Network. These system applied WAVE communication enables to use Ntrip Protocol that is streaming by TCP/IP protocol stack. Furthermore, WAVE communication express broad communication radius and attract its performance transfer rate and latency in spite of the high speed. Intelligent vehicle need stable communication with much information on the highway for high quality control and positioning service to drivers. Due to this advantage having low-latency, WAVE is suitable for the DGPS communication method. For accuracy localization by WAVE communication, the system was configured Embedded PC based on WAVE OBU

Traffic incident information that can help road user is text information like tweet from Twitter, one of the major sources, and the research data such as GPS data, flow rate and congestion density level. Therefore, we decided to create the Traffic Incident Q&A System. This system collects tweets from Twitter, extracts and classifies tweets and research data into incident knowledgebase. Then, the system provides useful traffic information that road users can query to get what they need to know. So, we present an ontology design for this Traffic Incident Q&A System that using class relationship to avoid spatial search cost. This system can infer some information from knowledgebase and answer some of the frequently asked question.

Pre-crash safety measures are extremely important to avoid accidents especially for motorcycles. As for the pre-crash safety measures, a lot of investigations have been carried out on Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), which are the ways to provide information to a motorcycle rider. In the past, we proposed Awareness Assistant Indicator (AAI), which gives directional indications to a rider, when he or she needs to pay attention to something while driving. In this paper, we will report the evaluation methods and the results of evaluations on the effects of AAI in relation to the maneuvering actions by employing the Riding Trainer (RT) in the assessments.

They give estimated travelling time from any point A to any point B, regardless of hours of day, days of week, or holiday patterns. However, for a heavily trafficked city with quite unpredictable traffic like Bangkok, static travel time information may not be informative enough for commuters. We propose constructing travel time profile based on attributes of time, day, and roads for a road network. Using a data warehouse schema, we demonstrate modeling dynamic travel time profiles of Bangkok roads. In future, other types of interesting information such as major sports events or road closures can add more richness to the model. The study shows that the data warehousing approach can empower traffic controllers and road users with answers to various types of travel time questions regarding various constraints.

Our statistical analysis of accident records showed that (1) toll barriers (TBs) are highly accident-prone (2) a typical accident pattern of elderlies' is significantly different to that of non-elderlies' on TBs. Therefore, in this study, to know how elderly drivers behave at accident-prone areas on an expressway, we let 40 subjects drive the expressway and measured their driving behavior using multiple sensors (eye camera, video camera, etc.). Using measured sensor data, we evaluated and scored each subject's safe driving skill for preventing accidents based on driving instructors' knowledge. The result of evaluation was that elderlies' safe driving skill score at TB is significantly lower than that of non-elderlies'.

One of the information provision media is FM multiplex broadcasting which has bandwidth constraints. Therefore broadcast program assigns the items of VICS information priorities, and deletes the items of low priority if necessary. The broadcast program edits according to a table for controlling priorities (priority control table) that has presently a single pattern throughout the year. Then we planned to conduct a research to develop methods to select useful information to drivers according to the changes in road traffic or weather conditions. In this research we analyze temporal and spatial trends and identify patterns inVICS information, investigate the relationships of those patterns with the factors that cause the pattern incidence and try to confirm the possibility of deletion control of VICS information by multiple priority control tables defined based on the pattern analysis.

Apprising drivers of the accurate travel time has been attempted to divert the traffic and eliminate the traffic jam. With such a background, it is important to establish a method for accurately estimation the travel time. In general, the estimation of the travel time is performed by using past data. As an example of this technique, the AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification) system which calculates the travel time by analyzing images captured by a camera has usually been employed. However, a large-scale investment is required in realizing an AVI system which limits to its application. What’s more, the result which is obtained from the AVI system is not an estimation of travel time, but records of the past data. Regarding these problems, estimating travel time by analyzing the data from vehicle sensors is proposed in this paper.

It automatically analyzes their video, accelerometer, and GPS measurements at the occurrence of traffic near-accidents. Video data are processed by using the computer-vision algorithm of 3-dimensional generic object recognition to detect the object appearing in close front of the automobile.
The positions and movements of the automobile and the object are reproduced on a map in order to investigate the potential risk at the place where a near-accident occurred. This automated system realizes the statistical and spatial analysis of the risk of traffic accidents on the roads and crossings in towns.

In order to mitigate multipath, we have developed a technique called IMMT (Improved Multipath Mitigation Technique) which could pretend to surpass existing multipath mitigation techniques. The experimental results show that position accuracy of 1 m or less achieves 90.5 % of time by using IMMT with Japanese Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) called MSAS under multipath environments. IMMT is applicable to any grade of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers. It only requires differential corrections. By adding more GNSS satellites into IMMT, we have good prospect on our approach how to realize 1 m position accuracy.

In the past, people care about the functionality of newer products/ systems and pursue the advanced system which could be applied in the transportation systems. However, it made the product/ system quality is uneven and caused further operation problems (e.q., operation risk, finance risk or interface management between varied systems). In these circumstances, the quality related issues such as the reliability, availability, and maintainability were ignored, and a lot of unnecessary expenses were consumed during the product/ system life cycle as well. Hence, this paper describes the product certifications conceptions that can be available used to solve the above problems and introduces the effective method- Independent Verification & Validation throughout the life cycle of ITS products or system.

The method for extracting the probe vehicles proper to estimate trajectories and application of incoming / outgoing probe vehicles in the midblock are future subjects.
Furthermore, this method can predict traffic condition in near future. For example in Fig.1, even based on input data (detector data and probe data) by time A, vehicle trajectories in region ABC can be predicted in which slope AC and BC are wave speed u and w respectively. Therefore, if current present time is A, from the estimated result in region ABC, we can tell a vehicle departing from the entrance of the study section at time A when it will reaches the tail of the queue and how long the queue length.

But the EV's driving distance is shorter than the Gas Vehicle's one which could lead to the disincentive of the EV's growth. The various approaches are done to improve the EV's quality of experience. For example, the exact estimation of the power consumption is important at the vehicle navigation service to notify the allowable driving distance to the drivers. In this paper, we try to estimate the EV's power consumption by building the model formula of the power consumption in each road link.We make an attempt to adopt the distributed processing platform to lead the model formula. We report the development of the EV's power consumption estimation engine and the comparison result with the actual car driving data.

For the purpose of safety driving, we develop the vehicle navigation system with Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RF-ID) to keep the driving lane. The vehicle position in the lane is written on RF-ID tags and they are buried in road. Our experimental vehicle equips two RF-ID antennas which communicate with RF-ID tags and get vehicle location on the lane. This information is given to a driver by Graphical User Interface(GUI) and voice instruction. GUI shows vehicle location and direction to the center of lane.
In order to simulate low visible condition, we put a bubble wrap on windshield. Our system helps to keep the lane against low visible condition. Comparing presented system with one antenna system, two antennas system contributes to reduce the cost of installing RF-ID tags.

In each national highway office under the jurisdiction of the Chubu region, separate and different systems are used to transmit information during normal times as well as in times of disaster. Not only is this inconvenient from a user perspective but also it increases the cost of system maintenance. In recent years, low-cost and portable informational terminals have found widespread use. This has resulted in improvements in the speed and accuracy of communication between on-site terminals and the internet. Because of such improvements, there is a desire to introduce new systems.

We can understand how road sections were flooded and how vehicles were swept away by tsunami by utilizing tsunami information. Then, he reproducibility of the evacuation simulation results has not yet been verified, and it is necessary to do so by utilizing the trajectories data of vehicles.

In this study, we extracted the blocked road regions in a large-scale disaster by using satellite images that are hardly affected by disasters. Moreover, we proposed a method that can be used in the case of not only earthquake damage, but also tsunami damage such as The Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011. The proposed method can be used to search for passable routes from among affected roads. We improve the method and propose a way of extracting the blocked roads with a higher accuracy.

Although telephone, both land line and cellular phone, were the main communication tool during the major traffic congestion in the greater Tokyo area caused by the earthquake disaster, all of the telephones had bad connections because of the restriction in the volume of calls. Once a natural disaster occurs in the greater Tokyo area, and it may interfere with obtaining correct traffic information. This is a report to show the results of research and tests, to improve the ability to obtain and use the necessary information even during a natural disaster by diversifying the ways of obtaining traffic information, such as using the Internet.

In the first step, using a satellite image and a digital map, we compute vehicle density from the number of vehicles on each road section by counting the front and rear edges of the vehicles. In the second step, we extract vehicle queues in the road lane on the basis of vehicle distance. By this stepwise processing, we omit a useless computation and reduce the effect of various noises to increase the accuracy of extraction.
