Although methods for verifying microscopic vehicle motion data such as vehicle positions and speeds have been proposed, no method for verifying acceleration behaviors has been well defined. In our study, probe vehicle data from Tokyo's Komazawa-dori. and simulation outputs were classified into four driving modes on the basis of vehicle behavior and investigated by mode. Our findings demonstrate that differences in acceleration behavior between probe vehicle data and simulation outputs influence CO2 emission quantities.

Under such projects experiments to verify effectiveness in real road situations are moving to the next stage of deployment. Deployment by vehicle manufacturers is main focus but older model vehicles present special challenges that may necessitate after-market or third-party devices. In this paper we evaluate Human Machine Interface(HMI) to obtain maximum safety effect, as well as find device position relating to after-market/preinstalled systems. Results of V2X driving support experiments using such HMI in real world situation are analyzed to determine best practice as related to services such as pedestrian collision avoidance and other high priority accident scenarios. Driver questionnaire employed to find market acceptance. Finally comparison with ideal HMI is done to verify level of safety achieved.

However, in order to realize this promise, important obstacles must be overcome. Often, Big data is noisy and inconsistent. Privacy and confidentiality must be assured. Data from different sources must be integrated, and deep analytics must be applied to drive business value. In this paper, an ITS common platform to transform uncertain Big data into valuable data by integrating several intelligences such as a streaming process with embedded analytics, an automated ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) process to create application specific data marts with privacy preservation technologies, and interfaces to access the platform is discussed.

This research applies a randomized meta-heuristic algorithm, greedy randomized tabu search, for network-level signal optimization problems. The algorithm can be a systematic approach for decision-making of traffic signal strategies to improve network performance.
However, how to accurately evaluate the proposed algorithm is an issue in this paper. Meta heuristic algorithms start searching procedure with generation a set of solution/s in the first iteration. Then simulation model of the considered problems is called and the fitness function is calculated for each individual to evaluate the goodness of such solution.
In order to compare the performance of GRTS with other algorithms/approaches, Genetic algorithm and two signal optimization softwares are chosen to generate optimal signal strategies. A novel comparison criterion which is independent of computer capability and computational time is proposed and appropriate numerical comparisons are performed.

The MOTC has assisted local governments in upgrading regional public transportation systems to achieve seamless transportation regarding the aspects of space, time, information, and service. The conditions of public roads and transportation services and the influence that operating plans have on transportation accessibility must be understood to achieve this goal. In this study, we applied the spatial analysis function of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the benefits of various seamless service assessment indicators for public transportation services within and outside various administrative areas. We also analyzed the benefits provided by the revision and evaluation of public transportation operating plans (such as the addition of routes and adjustment of routes and rescheduling of the timetable). Finally, we analyzed the influence that the added routes had on accessibility.

Although the effect has been evaluated positively, the method involves a lane closure at either approach, and the risky lane-change behavior at the approach where one lane is decreased has not been studied. In this study, the lane-change behavior when one lane is closed by a variable barrier which is informed by a variable message sign (VMS) is analyzed by driving simulation experiment considering the implementation of the dynamic lane operation for merging sections at Route C1 of Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway. Traffic condition and the distance between a lane-closure point and a VMS are considered as critical factors affecting the risky behavior, and their influence on the lane-change behavior is studied.

Through the two-way communication between infrared beacons and vehicles equipped with onboard units, Traffic Control Center collects information such as vehicle identification numbers and travel time. The information is called uplink data and is expected to contribute to research and development of traffic management. However, studies on the status of collection and practical application of it have been quite few. In this paper, we examine the statistics of collecting uplink data for long periods. Moreover, we validate travel time estimated from this data.

This paper specifically addresses accidents occurring during left turns. In a first step, the necessity for a left-turn-specific system was analyzed based on accident statistics, and it was found that such a system is desirable as left-turn accidents are most frequent leaving aside accident types for which V2ISs have been already developed. In a second step, the accident reduction effect of the Left Side Crossing Pedestrian Recognition Enhancement System (LSPS), a V2IS, was evaluated, and it was found that, since late noticing of pedestrians is a major cause of accidents, the system will have an effect on accident reduction. Finally, a field test was conducted, which confirmed the effectiveness of the LSPS.

In the previous study, detection of drowsiness level based on physiological signals or facial features from driver monitoring camera have been suggested. However, drowsiness level detection accuracy is not enough by these method. This study therefore proposed the estimation of driver's drowsiness level considering gradual change in the arousal state by ECG, breath information, facial features and seat pressure. Through the performance validation of proposal method during the experiment using the driving simulator, we obtained high accuracy and high relation for estimation of drowsiness level.

In signal control, travel time and delay time are thought to be desirable performance indexes. Nevertheless these methods adopt other indexes in the calculation of control parameters. Thus it has been pointed out that reduction of travel time and delay time is not necessarily guaranteed in the operation of these methods. To solve the drawback, we proposed a new control method which is set target travel time for a target route and attempt to realize the time. Our method determines signal control parameters on the basis of the travel time estimated with a traffic flow model. We conducted a simulation experiment and field experiment using the proposed method on a national road in Chiba Prefecture to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Until now results have been obtained from driving simulators or in a field study of limited scope, however have not yet been quantified in a generalized manner. To obtain first quantitative results for a real-world environment, we therefore implemented the necessary infrastructure at several intersections in Toyota City (Aichi Prefecture) and are currently carrying out a monitor experiment, where citizens were asked to use the system in their daily lives. The field study confirmed that the system is effective in reducing accidents caused by a lack of safety confirmation by drivers.

When a passenger car is hit from behind by a larger automobile such as a bus or truck, the damage can be severe. Many technological attempts, including pre-crash safety systems, have been made to reduce the number of collisions and minimize the damage they cause. Higher awareness about driving safety has led to calls for pre-crash safety systems installed not only on passenger cars but on buses and trucks. Recent radar technology plays an important role in the solutions, including its application in developing emergency braking systems and dummy cars. We have developed an imaging radar system to facilitate testing and evaluation of how well a radar under test performs in detecting, for example, a lead vehicle or a pedestrian crossing the street. This imaging radar also helps in analyzing the intensity of reflected waves to improve emergency braking systems.

A probe-car can effectively collect data on traffic condition of roads where existing detectors are not installed. The probe-car detects the travel time, but it does not measure the traffic volume on the road directly. Therefore, a traffic volume estimation method using probe-car data is expected to find out the traffic volume of all roads in a city. This paper describes a traffic volume estimation method using speed-density-flow models and the probe-car data. The models are calculated on some representative roads and the traffic volumes of the road on which traffic volume cannot be observed directly are estimated using the model of similar road feature. We evaluated the estimated accuracy of the method, and we obtained the prospect that the method can estimate the traffic volume with an approximately 30% average error rate.

Most studies have used (i) survey questionnaires asking crash experience, citations, and driving behaviors, and/or (ii) analyzed individual vehicular data such as maximum deceleration rate and highest speed. This study proposed a new index that captures drivers’ aggressiveness based on inter-vehicular dynamics data. Proposed index based on the time-to-collision and deceleration rate difference was applied to real world vehicular dynamics data obtained from drivers participated in driving tests. Proposed index clearly showed that younger female drivers were the most aggressive and followed by younger male drivers. Responses of survey questionnaire data from the participants were compared with proposed index. Results indicated that the index does not appear to match well with some drivers, implying that questionnaire responses might not be the best indicator for capturing drivers’ aggressiveness.

It further outlines the results of an evaluation of the driver's acceptance of the service. Between 2008 and 2010 there were 30 fatalities and severe accidents involving road workers on Japanese highways. These accidents mainly occurred because drivers did not notice a road work site. The reason for not noticing the road work site on a straight road was found to be a lack of carefulness in street observation in more than half of all cases. In order to address this, we have developed a system that prevents overlooking road work sites and road workers by informing drivers some hundred meters in advance on the presence of such sites via wireless information transfer.

Highways running in the suburban areas in Japan have a common method of charging, which
is based on the distance the vehicle has traveled. However, in urban areas, there is no land to
construct tollgates and may adopt a uniform rate system. In this case, feelings of inequality
arise to the user. To remedy this issue, the flexible fee collection system using a free flow
antenna is operated on thru lanes and exit ramps. However, compared with the radio system
installed at tollgates, the rate of incidence of abnormalities in communication is high.We have
performed examinations on the installation method of a free flow antenna that will reduce the
rate of abnormalities, paying attention to ease of use in the actual operation.

Therefore, it is important to reduce unnecessary reflection from surrounding concrete structures for DSRC communication, including that for ETC at tollgates or in tunnels which
are also surrounded by concrete structures. A microwave absorber is used to reduce the wave
reflection at the canopy of tollgates. It is necessary to use a lift truck to measure the absorber performance at the canopy. However, this operation is very troublesome. To simplify the operation, we proposed a new measurement system that uses a metal-plate lens antenna
installed on the ground. This makes the measurement operation safe, not having to use a lift truck.

Due to snow and ice, cars' stopping distance becomes considerably longer than under dry condition. This paper proposes a method to detect road surface conditions in winter by using images acquired through CCTV cameras on the roads. This method can be widely applied for public highway by using existing infrastructure. The method can detect road surface conditions based on texture features and the Mahalanobis distance. It was concluded that road surface conditions can be detected using images acquired through CCTV cameras at both daytime and night-time.

The original model was designed for 76.5 GHz radar, but support for 24 GHz and 79 GHz radars was added in subsequent models. This 3 m by 3 m compact system can easily be installed in a typical 10 m by 10 m room.

Many existing systems use cellular network for sending current bus location information to a management server and delivering bus operation information to bus stops. Therefore, it is difficult to keep operating system of community bus because of high communication costs in Japan. In this paper, we propose a novel bus location system using wireless sensor network without community cost. In the proposed system, the wireless sensor network is constructed with IEEE802.15.4-compliant sensor devices that are installed in buses, bus stops and street along the bus routes. We have developed the prototype system and verified the behavior. It was confirmed that bus location information could be collect only by a wireless sensor network without a cellular network in actual environment.

This is one of our new projects: We developed the new vehicle for giving drivers the clean road to keep them safe. It can remove about 90% falling objects like stones, rocks and large vehicle's tires which will turn to be some dangerous factors. Last year we developed the new vehicle. We called it, NRCV. And we were going to improve and downsize. We report this development project with the results of the test.

We use the driver's heart rate variability and eyelid closure 60 seconds after start of driving. Our estimation method is multiple linear regression analysis, and we compare the estimated time to reach critical drowsiness level by each driver to the actually measured one. The results showed that the coefficient of correlation was 0.856. Therefore, our proposed method demonstrated the possibility to estimate quantitatively the time required by each driver to reach a critical or risky drowsiness level.

Driving behavior needs to be considered when calculating the reduction of CO2 emission of ITS measures. However, mesoscopic traffic simulation models cannot expressly process driving behavior. Three options to consider driving behavior change in a mesoscopic CO2 emission model are suggested. The accuracy of Option 3 (designed running pattern method) is validated using the result of field tests for a normal driving case and an e-start driving case (e-start driving is starting and acceleration to achieve 20km/h in 5 seconds). The authors confirmed that the result of field tests and the result calculated by the mesoscopic CO2 emission model have similar trends.
