This time, we report technology for
generating road shape information, which is structural data on intersections and roads among
data to be distributed to DSSSs. Vehicles receiving DSSS services use this road shape
information to calculate their positions and distances to intersections and junctions without
depending on the mapping data of the navigation system, and provide DSSS services for
drivers. Thus, road shape information requires highly accurate 3D coordinate data. This paper
reports the utilization of MMS (mobile mapping system) (3), which is a technologies of the
global-navigation satellite system (GNSS), for the generation of road shape information

The prediction method is based on time series analysis for short to long term prediction. To achieve higher prediction accuracy, we need fundamental extensions which handle non-uniform traffic data from insufficient data source and non-stationary traffic situation. A solution for first problem is a refinement of link travel time quality by automatic combination of multiple links. The latter solution is a non-stationary traffic prediction based on a traffic simulation dedicated to traffic accidents.

However, the actual proof experiment by vehicle-to-vehicle communications proceeds, and there are few application examples to a spot communications system. Then, we developed the WAVE communications system applicable to spot communication of an about communication zone 10 meter. So, we designed optimal communication architecture (synchronization and channel control) for spot communication system that has high-speed communication and multi-communication. Finally we have examined the running test at internal test filed, and have proved that optimized WAVE is applicable to the spot communication system suitable for ETC and other Toll system services.

The probe car, which mounts a stereo camera and a GPS sensor, measures the traffic density using a distance map from the stereo camera and receives the velocity and position information of the car from the GPS sensor. Traffic control center creates a traffic condition map according to the probe car data and use it for traffic control, car navigation, and bus/taxi scheduling. We implement the camera-based probe car system as an in-vehicle device using an in-vehicle image recognition processor and show its abilities of real-time processing using traffic videos.

Although various systems to detect drowsy driving have been installed in vehicles, only to detect drivers’ drowsiness is not enough to maintain safe driving. Therefore in this study, we focused on awaking drivers. Many studies using fragrance, audio or vibration to raise driver vigilance are reported. However, those effects were temporary. Self-control is important to raise vigilance continuously. Then we used the biofeedback to enable self-control. We examined effects on drivers by showing the drowsiness level with the driving simulator. As a result, the progress of driver’s drowsiness was delayed and the number of awaking time was increased by showing the drowsiness level.

In Japan, for estimating CO2 emission of logistic vehicles, the "improved ton-kilometer method" is commonly used, in which the major parameter is the distance between the origin and the destination. Previous studies show the CO2 emission estimation will be done correctly by using the behavior of vehicles, such as the change of speed or times of starts and stops. We have been developing the probe system consists of available RSUs and DSRC OBUs, which can collect the vehicles' location and speed in short (200m) trips. By adding up the emission of each short trip, the total emission will be estimated. Further, the field experiment plan using the system is explained briefly.

Recently, as a more flexible and efficient road pricing method which takes the place of existing DSRC based systems, GNSS/CN-based road pricing system is attracting a lot of attentions. We developed a new GNSS/CN based road pricing system which has capabilities of charging, enforcement, traffic information dissemination, and traffic data collection. In 2012, Singapore government held a technical trial for the next generation ERP system based on GNSS tracking technology. We demonstrated our system at this trial, performing function and performance test. In the performance test, we carried out vehicle running tests on the public roads. And we acquired a sufficient result that we can actualize the system which achieves required performance and reliability for the actual operation. In this paper, test condition and evaluation method especially for positioning and charging are reported.

To this end, the Highway EMS will properly guide EVs so that the EVs do not run out of energy on the highway and arrive at those Service Areas/Parking Areas (SA/PAs) where waiting time for charging is short, maximize the utilization rate of the charging facilities and level the power load to the grid. Here we present a prototype of an EV charging scheduler that collectively plans the charging of EVs and charging and discharging of Stationary Storage Batteries (SSBs) and guides EVs to proper charging locations. We also present the traffic and power simulators that we have developed to verify the effectiveness of the Highway EMS and determine the effective placement of charging facilities.

The key point of the algorithm is a newly developed region extraction to efficiently narrow down many blobs to promising candidates of the marker utilizing shape features. The final detection results are obtained by template matching on the candidates and the detected positions are refined through a filtering process. Based on experiments using video data under several illumination conditions, we confirmed that the detection rate archived 100% where the positional accuracy is within one pixel. Our method is expected to save manual labors in the calibration process and to ensure the stable quality of the synthesized image of the multi-camera monitor system in a mass-production line.

In particular, there are many crossing collisions so we validated the notification timing for it. Also in Japan, many numbers of crossing collision occurs every year. In Advance Safety Vehicle project (ASV) in Japan, safety applications are developed aiming to reduce such accidents. In each project, we set the appropriate notification timing for crossing collision scene, but parameter set is only for motorcycle in DRIVE C2X and is for standard-sized car in ASV. So we evaluate the more effective notification method for various target vehicle types. It can be expected that the appropriate notification timing differs for each target vehicle type.

Driving simulator was used to examine elderly drivers' behavior and psychological aspect under the proto-types of the VICS services based on various parameters of information content. The driver behavior and the effect of the VICS service were evaluated in terms of driving performance, visual behavior, subjective reports, comparing between elderly and non-elderly drivers. The results show that particular VICS services do not always guide preparatory driver action to approach intersection and elevate sense of vigilance against the disaster event. The VICS services are expected to improve driver safety by designing the HMI based on the obtained results.

As a method for realizing this, instead of a conventional method to send images in real time directly by communication, we adopted the way to integrate the multiplexing contents at the same point and to conduct filtering of inappropriate video images with Stream Data Processing, in an effort to solve practical problems.

The unnecessary vehicle movements are able to be decreased by provision of appropriate information. In this study, we investigate actual vehicle movements and develop an information provision system reflecting the actual vehicle movements. The system is constructed with a 3D driving simulator. The system is able to indicate optimum speed on the display to reduce unnecessary vehicle movements. When drivers follow the indicated optimum speed, they can pass through the signalized intersection ahead without stopping. As a result, unnecessary vehicle movements were improved by the information provision system and CO2 emission was also reduced.
