Travel time and speed can be estimated from many methods and data including GPS location and speed data. In literature, there are various methods to calculate travel time and speed from GPS data. We are interested in comparing two following methods for their equivalence. First, Mean Travel Speed (MTS) is calculated from distance and timestamp. Second, Time-Space Mean Speed (TSMS) is an arithmetic average of spot speed. Our experiment shows that the average difference between these methods is less than 6% in presence of GPS errors. Moreover, when down-sampling, the errors of both methods increase to 11% at 60-second sampling period. However, increase in errors also depends on the congestion levels of roads. From our results, these two methods can be used interchangeably with accuracy depending on sampling period, congestion of roads and GPS errors.

This research proposes four detection methods to capture the change in congestion level on freeway segments by using the dedicated short range communication (DSRC) probe data as well as the loop detector based vehicle detection system (VDS) data. For developing the detection methods, this research basically estimates the decision tree models in which the dependent variable is the change in congestion level and the covariates are the DSRC and VDS data collected from the freeway segments in Korea. The comparison results show that the decision tree model with DSRC and VDS and the decision tree model with only DSRC are better than the decision tree model with only VDS. Specifically, the two models with better fits show approximately 95% accuracies.

The system uses nine statistical profiles along with a models-based routing system to estimate the travel time and distance that an emergency vehicle would need to travel. In this paper, we discuss the process of creating the traffic profiles along with the special rules that were implemented to cater to the specific traveling patterns of emergency vehicles (e.g., they can use road shoulders, they get priority on the roads). We will discuss some of the analyses that were performed based on simulated locations of incidents and calculated response times from different locations. We also include information about the accuracy of the model, as estimated using historical records. Finally, we highlight the key challenges faced.

In former development, a redundant brake system had parallel placed with a main brake system for keeping a safety in automatic platooning experiment. However, these main and redundant brake systems have the same-type EBS computer. In this paper, safety brake as a third brake system is developed by mechanical type system for safety improvement in automatic platooning experiments. The security brake system adjusts a brake force in each loading condition based on a mechanical type valve. The security brake system was designed and a benchmark brake system was constructed.

For the 1) constraint, location-based information database and DS content optimization framework will enable to create appropriate DS content expression according to data type and displays. For the 2) constraint, resource monitoring system will manage each device and system for long-term operation. In this paper, we design and implement LORDS with location-based information database, flexible creation framework of DS contents and resource monitoring systems as a verification environment for both 1) and 2) difficulties.

Normally, the energy conversion efficiency in road vehicle was presented in term of amount of fuel per distance within specific condition where it could not be comparable in practice especially in logistic sector that the variation of load factor and dynamic traffic condition were impacted. In this study, the alternative efficiency indicator was proposed with applying kinetic energy concept to formulate road-vehicle efficiency factor (REF) which include dynamic behavior and weight of vehicle. Therefore, the road-vehicle efficiency factor were manipulated and shown that the factor could be used to indicate the efficiency in various types of vehicle. From the tests, the vehicles within same powertrain technology were had same trend of REF. In conclusion, this method could be applied for further vehicle analysis.

In this paper, a rolling optimization algorithm is proposed to set up the traffic signal schedule with bus priority of an isolated road intersection. The rolling optimization procedure is repeated at regular time intervals, where the bus arrival time approaching the intersection is first estimated and an optimized signal schedule for a certain number of time intervals is generated to minimize the average delay per passenger. As the schedule may be changed at the next optimizing interval, the transits meant to arrive in the next interval are giving a larger weight than other transits. The rolling optimization algorithm considers both the long-term and short-term performances.

Interest in metro services with passenger perspectives, particularly with regard to daily transit use, increased with the introduction of the smart card system. The results show that low level of service measures on both operational speed and seat occupancy are observed at certain route segments. Further a close relationship between seat occupancy and speed is found, which illustrates the high passenger demand causes the bus delay. These findings are beneficial to bus agencies and planners for promoting more transit-friendly for addressing mobility problems of the transit service.

The major role of the systems was providing real-time traffic information to vehicle drivers. To provide reliable real-time traffic information, it is necessary to collect traffic data with a certain level of accuracy from the ITS system installed. However, the system already in operation needs to be checked and calibrated periodically, since as time goes by, it does not get to work properly and thus cannot produce accurate traffic data. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs instituted the ITS system performance evaluation. In this paper the outline of the ITS system performance evaluation is introduced based upon its historical background. In addition, the characteristics and system configuration of the portable reference equipment developed for the performance evaluation are introduced.

In this research, we try to create the ecological driving pattern for eco-driving diagnosis. In driving diagnosis, we calculate eco-driving pattern just after user's driving where actual driving speed recorded as "real driving pattern", and try to make this algorithm simple for implementation of the onboard system. In this paper we have explained about an ecological driving pattern creation method and evaluate it in the actual driving of sample routes.

In this research, the scene features a motorcycle suddenly appearing from a behind a lane of vehicles in a congested street into the path of an oncoming car turning right at an intersection. Then we measured various driver behaviors in the same accident environment. As a result, we found same accident probability occurs in the simulated accident situation. We analyzed the relation between the accident probability and the driving behavior before collision. The driver often only has less than one second before applying brake, that is to say, in this type of intersection accident, the permitted avoidance time is short. To avoid a collision between a vehicle turning right and an oncoming vehicle, it is important to predict the possibility of danger in the intersection and lower the vehicle speed while driving through the intersection.

This paper proposes a charging station recommendation system which controls EVs charging behaviors to balance the load of charging stations satisfying the electricity supply schedule. This system analyzes big data such as time series data of traffic and weather stored over a long period of time, and extracts useful rules to predict the average velocity and electricity efficiency of each road link. Thus, the system can follow the latest environment. This paper proposes big data analysis techniques in the EV charging recommendation system, and shows a numerical experimentation result where EVs’ total waiting time at charging stations becomes shorter.

In this paper we performed an in-depth analysis compiled by ITARDA (Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis) and demonstrated the benefit estimation process. The benefit of LDW is estimated by comparing lane departure events when the vehicle has no LDW, and how they change with the addition of LDW. The analyzed results were used to re-create LDW event using ASSTREET (Advanced Safety System & Traffic REaltime Evaluation Tool). The drivers' responses to the warning were measured in a driving simulator test. The comparison between events with and without LDW clearly shows which cases could be prevented by the use of LDW and the ones that could not be avoided, thereby, providing us with important guidelines to improve the system performance.

Steering-wheel tracking (ST), pedal tracking (PT), and visual detection (VD) tasks were examined as candidate tasks that were performed along with the assessed tasks in a laboratory situation. The results revealed that PT was a superior performance measurement task in terms of the sensitivities among the assessed task differences, and its performance measure (deviation ratio) was consistent with impacts on actual driving behavior (variability of vehicle lateral displacement and headway distance). Merits of the PT task used in the subsidiary-task procedure were discussed for the operational modalities and the cognitive demand concerning task predictability.

In order to develop a driver recognition system for personally tailored services, we focused on
personal authentication techniques using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. These techniques
typically utilized intervals and heights of the ECG waveform as parameters. Fast
authentication is required for usability. However, since there is considerable variation in ECG
parameters within individuals, accurate authentication is a challenging task, and it takes time,
even when the person is in a relatively relaxed state. This paper reports on a study that we
carried out to improve the accuracy of authentication under varying parameter settings.

Its long-term effect is already proved for cars3). This time, ODS was re-designed for bicycle, and we performed a subject test with cyclists, running through a gradient section composed of four road-marking sections: ODS/Large, ODS/Small, Traversal line, and Plain w/o markings. As a result, speed in the ODS section was significantly decreased, while the Traversal line section had no speed control effect same as the Plain section.

To conduct this work, this study has defined the networking index(NI) and networking rate(NR) to analyze the target road networking ability quantitatively. One of the proposed NI is the set of the intelligent transport systems(i.e., ITS) related indices as the critical factors to impact of drivers’ route choices on the networking ability(i.e., NR), because they are willing to change their current routes when the traffic information on their alternatives is accurate with the level of reliability. Those routing behaviors lead to the equilibrium traffic flow on the target network. The statistical analysis indicates that the NI related to ITS show higher impacts on the NR than the existing physical NI.
