There is a key junction for traffic where a main road radiating from the center of Tokyo and an orbital main road intersect in the city center, causing chronic traffic congestion. There are many commercial facilities located in the city center area, so on weekends and public holidays traffic congestion is generated by vehicles waiting to enter the car parks of the commercial facilities. This paper introduces initiatives to determine the traffic situation within the city using probe data collected by high speed high volume communication between ITS spots installed on the roads and car navigation systems compatible with ITS spots.

However in reality, vehicle flow rates of the two directions are not always equivalent. As a result, the traffic light at the vertical roadway may turn red when no car is driving on the horizontal roadway, or remain in red when all cars on the horizontal roadway have passed the intersection. In this paper, we develop an intelligent traffic light control application to relieve these situations. Besides, at cooperative vehicular safety environment of WAVE/DSRC, each vehicle periodically broadcasts its current moving status. In addition, our proposed mechanism will collect and analyze the information broadcasted by all OBUs. Hence, the traffic lights are able to dynamic operate according the current vehicle flow rates of two directions and further reduce the street intersection waiting time and increase the traffic throughput at the street intersection.

The result that continuing effect is about 10 minutes have obtained. The effect of fragrance has been used for relaxation in the field of aromatherapy, and the effect in relieving fatigue can be also expected. Generally, feeling stress cause to decrease neurotransmitter serotonin that helps to restore a mental balance. This result leads to the strain and loss of concentration. We report on the verification on the effect in relieving fatigue of the driver by fragrance that stimulates the serotonin secretion.

This paper addresses the vehicle routing problem (VRP) in stochastic and time-dependent (STD) networks
with hard time window constraint. As the sub-problem of STDVRP, the STD optimal path between two customer
nodes is obtained through robust approach, which minimizes the worst-case travel time over all the candidate paths
without requiring the probability distributions of link travel times. With the sub-problem solved, the proposed
STDVRP model can be converted into a normal time-dependent (TD) vehicle routing problem and a route
construction algorithm is applied to solving the simplified problem in the extended Solomon instances as
efficiently as TDVRP. The computational results show that the proposed STDVRPTW model can improve the
level of customers' service by guarantee the time-window constraint satisfied and only lead to a little increase in
cost, which is especially apparent in the problems where the customers' time windows are narrow.

The scheme presents a solution of discontinuous lane marking for detection using camera and sensor fusion, including image processing, dead-reckoning and vehicular signals. To extract lane markings from image catching, DSP perform the task after image calibration and coordinate transform. The vision is applied by a camera which plays the role of displaying preceding image and warning information with buzzer. When operating at failure mode, inertial signals apply and provide available position. In dead reckoning technology, hybrid sensors address a global and all weather assistant design based on odometry and inertial sensor. From inertial data and vehicular information, this paper provides an extended solution with learning parameters to do remote warning. The proposed system is carried out with theoretical application and hardware integration, and furthermore the result shows extended LDWs approach applicability.

However, most of the studies focus on normal traffic environment without considering possible failure due to climate change. Climate change and associated impacts on transportation and infrastructure have become an important issue around the world in recent years. This research aims at assessing possible impacts of heavy precipitation on network reliability under real-time information. Two reliability indexes, including connectivity and travel time, are used to examine network reliability under heavy precipitation. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the impact of heavy precipitation on network reliability. A real city network, the Jiaxian network, which is heavily affected by Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan, is coded.

The aim of this method is to find out the best signaling model for considered network with the ME-GA for defining the optimum signal parameter. In this case, three signaling models (named as model 1, 2, and 3) are proposed for the considered road network. Several experiments were carried out using simple network model and real network model (Ooe-Toroku Kumamoto City Road Network Model) for evaluating the proposed methods. The experimental results show that the signaling model 1 with ME-GA provides the best performance which is shown by higher percentage of vehicle flow and less vehicle delay time than others signaling models for considered network.

ITS Spot system has the function of two-way I2V communication. MLIT has developed a probe system for collecting probe data from an ITS spot-compatible car navigation system through ITS spots. Specific sections of travel time and travel speed are calculated at the server computers. In this research the coverage region of probe data through ITS Spots on expressways is calculated and evaluated by index of cover rate. It is necessary to deploy additional ITS Spots on ordinary roads to collect probe data on main roads nationwide outside this coverage region. Coverage region of ITS Spots on ordinary roads is calculated and additional location of ITS Spots is suggested.

Six driving behavior parameters critical to the model accuracy are calibrated in the proposed procedure. Then, an example of the procedure application on a complex signalized intersection in Beijing is given. The average errors of queue length and traffic flow volume are used as the performance indexes in the example. Each scenario from the experimental design is run 10 times and the simulation result is recorded for each of the runs. The performance indexes based on simulation data are calculated to compare survey data. The results show the applicability and effectiveness of using the proposed procedure based on orthogonal experiment to calibrate the parameters in VISSIM.

Presence of traffic indicates movement of people and goods, and thus economic vitality. However, if left unchecked, excess traffic leads to congestion that results in wasted time and fuel, impacts the environment through increased emissions and negatively affects the qualify of life for citizens. To manage a city's transportation and environmental goals effectively, accurate data is required – beginning with basic information such as counting traffic passing on a street. In this article, we present a general approach for collecting traffic data from a multitude of sources, organizing that data for consumption by multiple parties and exploiting the data productively by many diverse
users. We illustrate this approach with a case study in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

By collecting the useful data can shorten the time to analyze such troubles in vehicle systems which consist of many sub-systems. The conventional remote data acquisition systems can only collect the fixed set of data, and the dedicated measurement instruments are required to collect the data under various conditions. We proposed a new system which can collect data under variable conditions by effectively utilizing the existing resource of the car navigation head unit. We conducted an actual vehicle experiment to verify the basic performance of the system.

In order to maintain global environment, to contribute to the stable supply of electric power and to prepare for a power-rates jump, the further reduction of energy consumed and peak cuts are needed. Grasp of actual conditions, and supervision and control of energy consumption are important. In this paper, the concept of the Railway Energy Management System (Railway EMS) is introduced. For electric railways, the energy used by a railway system is circulated using regenerative inverter equipment and storage batteries. The railway EMS aims at the optimal operation of energy by harmonizing with transportation and energy required for transportation, in the range of maintaining the service level of the railway.

One of these problems is that charging the battery of an EV needs a longer time than refueling of gasoline vehicles. To overcome these problems, for example, some local governments in Japan started projects in which restaurants and shops rent outlets for charging EV of their customers during eating or shopping. On the other hand, other local government in Japan has developed a system to reserve chargers by sharing information on usage of chargers. In this paper, we consider the above service to rent outlets during eating or shopping, and discuss how methods to reserve chargers affect the waiting time for charging EVs.

By defining how mobility should be in terms of people and goods, five viewpoints: Traffic flow, Mobility modality, Environment, Energy, and Medical & health care, which need to compile as solution and service are explained. These viewpoints benefit from the advanced ICT, sensing and device technology. With these viewpoints, the approach to solve the fundamental desire differs according to the characteristics of city and consequently solution and service to provide with these five might change due to which transport mode: private or public, should weight. As for the conclusion, our key systems to form our concept, Integrated Transport Solution, is explained categorizing by inter-city and inner-city transport. Especially for the inner-city transport, energy management for various transport modes such as LRT and electric bus becomes the key to realize environment friendly urban transport system.

Optimizing train running profile which minimizes total energy consumption provides the fundamentals for practical operation of train control. To obtain optimal train running profile in many previous works, this problem is formulated as optimal control problem with many conditions (fixed origin and destination, stipulated running time, limited electric power, limited velocity and so on) and is adopted the numerical methods for calculus of variations, Pontryagin's maximum principle, incremental method, dynamic programming, Markov decision process and so on. Especially, previous work utilizing dynamic programming is useful for optimizing train running profile under the complicated conditions. However, this algorithm requires much time to be used in practical situation. Therefore, we developed the algorithm for optimizing train running profile under the same complicated condition within a little time scale.

Energy consumption varies according to slope or surface condition of roads. Therefore, energy consumption differs depending on the place even if a vehicle runs at the same velocity, making it difficult to estimate the consumption accurately. In this paper, an EV simulator that calculates electric energy consumption and a method to obtain parameters that vary according to place by running on actual road are introduced. Slope angle and rolling resistance coefficient (RRC) are estimated by subtracting energy loss by other running resistance from drive motor output power when the vehicle runs on actual road. It is shown by experiment that accuracy of simulated energy consumption is improved by using parameters estimated by running on actual road.

Especially, license plate recognition (LPR) with image sensors is virtually the only technology that can identify each car in traffic flow at present. Automobiles with license plates of various formats travel across national boundaries as a result of liberalization of international traffic. In Southeast Asia, where non-Latin characters are used on license plates in some countries, liberalization is planned in 2015. We have developed a novel method for LPR. Our method does not assume a specific format nor a specific character system. In the experiment with Thai license plates, plate detection rate was 97.9%, and character recognition rate was 88.0%. The results show that our methods of license plate detection and character recognition were valid for Thai license plates.

In order to conduct research on future highway EMSs, a simulator is needed for evaluating EV charging strategies. For this purpose, it is necessary to model how EV charging strategies affect EV drivers' decision-making. Multi-agent simulators (MASs) are often used for predicting the total effect on individuals' decision-making and activities. This paper presents a new general-purpose meta-level multi-agent simulator, MetaMAS, which simulates the total effect of individual agents' activities using domain-specific simulators. Using MetaMAS agents, we model the key players of the highway EMS and integrate traffic and power simulators. We show how MetaMAS agents communicate with one another and interact with traffic and power simulators. We also show how to evaluate some charging strategies of the highway EMS.

This paper attempts to propose an approach for optimizing the object searching on the maps.
The current object searching process has been developed but it takes an excessive amount of time (about 2 seconds) (a number of data to process is effect in having taking a long time) this paper proposes an approach in solving the problem by using spatial search model. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the proposed approach has processing time about 0.75 millisecond. This result in improvement about 4,000 times. The proposed approach can be applied in solving other geometry data problems such as routing system, and map matching system.

Because the bottleneck is located around the Yamato Tunnel, it has been difficult to care for the bottleneck. Thus, the dynamic information provision regarding the speed recovery and lane utilization was planned. The information is provided on VMS displays in the condition just before a traffic jam occurs, and the condition is automatically analyzed by the data collected by traffic counters. This research focuses on the effectiveness of the information to alleviate heavy traffic jams and enhance traffic condition of the section. The result was the information affects drivers on changing from the densest lane to the sparse lanes.

Since traffic control lights are the main tools to set and optimize flow in urban networks, precise planning for such lights is of high importance to increase network efficiency and improve the performance in oversaturation conditions. Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) is used to optimally control traffic lights in urban networks. Not considering the long queues and spillback conditions of traffic flow is of the restrictions of such a system. This paper tries to present a method to improve performance of SCATS by considering long queues and spillback conditions in congested arterials. The presented method was tested in a sample arterial of Tehran, Iran. The results indicate lights performance improvement in conditions with using queue detector and preventing queue spillback to upstream intersection.

To solve this problem, ITS center introduced the Infrared floodlights. However, it didn't get the desired video quality, so that the camera lens is not compatible with floodlights. Therefore, installation of streetlights around CCTV became necessary. The results obtained through this study are as follows. First, install street lights proper interval of 50m within a reasonable when considering the street lights using time-lapse due to illumination degradation. Second, considering the uniformity ratio of illumination, the street lights installed by equal spacing. Third, select lamp luminaries with good-color rendering.
