Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS)
Development of the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) commenced in 1963 with an 8 intersection pilot coordination system in the Sydney CBD using valve-based IBM equipment. This was followed in 1964 by the Brisbane St Control Room. By 1970 solid state systems and PDP-11 minicomputers were in use, followed in 1974 by the first microprocessor traffic signal controller.
SCATS is owned and developed by Roads & Maritime Services – a government transport authority in New South Wales, and
has undergone continuous enhancement since its inception. It is now a sophisticated and intelligent system that is generally considered to be one of the world’s leading adaptive traffic signal control systems.
SCATS now controls over 37,000 intersections in 27 countries.
